Hi everyone, next year I want to travel to the Isle Of Man on my Vectrix to watch the TT Racing. So heres the deal - I want a 100 mile (160km) range from my Vectrix. I am more than happy to limit my speed to 30mph (50 kmh). One question - 'which batteries should I buy to give me the best range ?'

of course you need 42cell of 50AH CHL battery,it could ensure you 160kms at 40km/h cruise speed.
Thanks for the prompt reply. That is so temptingly close to what I need. Unfortunately doing 40km/h (25mph) on UK roads would probably get me killed ! If I did 50km/h on those batteries what range would I be looking at ? Are there 60Ah or 70Ah batteries available and would they give me the range ?

It is a pity that CHL only 40ah,50ah and 100ah,100ah is too big size for vectrix battery box,other brand 60ah or 70ah is too big too.
What's weight of vectrix ? what's its current output at 50km/h cruise speed ? so that I can calculate estimated range.
I'm not sure of the weight but it is a standard bike - no alterations. I can tell you exactly the current range as I have done a lot of range testing. At 50km/h (30mph) I get 71km (43miles).

71kms based on original NIMH battery ? now my 50AH is based on 1 hour rate,almost 2 times capacity of NIMH
So I should get double the range ? Thats not bad at all :-) Has anybody been able to confirm this in the real world testing on a Vectrix with these batteries installed ? I'd love to know about it before I buy the new batteries. When new, my Nimh batteries gave me a maximum range of 61km but now (3 years later) I get 71km - do these batteries get better with age ? And is the same thing likely to happen with the new Lithium batteries ?

Maybe you are more slim than 3 years before....
Normally LFP battery capacity will be imcreased at first 10 cycles,see attached. and then drop.....
I'd love 70km range on the standard batteries - i've only managed 52km !
As usual, doubling the battery (or more) capacity means problems to fit the extra battery capacity on the electric scooter.
Also, the extra weight of the battery has a impact on the handling of the electric scooter.
Very high capacity batteries are very expensive. For any battery operated vehicle, it's not the motor or controller that drive the price upwards,
but the price of the batteries that follow rather a logaritmic price for performance.
No doubt, you need 70Ah-100Ah
Have a look at the lipo kokam cells.

They're extremely lihgtweight, and perform good at hi discharge rates.
70Ah cells would allow 160km, at 50kmh
I will have the conversion kit available at the end of this year
Est total conversion cost is roughly US$7.5k
could you charge more often en-route?
It would be expensive to buy enough battery to make it there, and only make full use of it once....

Hi Matt, Good to hear from you again. That sounds like the solution for me, I better get saving up !
I have three options available to me -
1) Charging en-route Nimh : Using my existing batteries I would need to make a huge detour to incorporate two public charging points. This is my least favourite option as it would take ages to get there :-(
2) Charging en-route Li : Currently, between where I live and the campsite on the Isle Of Man there is only one guaranteed public charge point. If I use that (making a detour) that makes my furthest journey I would have to make about 97km (60 miles) and that is presuming there are no road blocks or other diversions and I can maintain a steady 50kmph (30mph). This would be do-able with lower Ah capacity batteries if that was my only option.
3) No charging en-route Li : If I was to do the whole trip in one go without charging then the minimum distance I would need to be able to cover would be 131km (85miles), I would prefer to do this with a battery pack that has plenty of 'spare' power so that I can allow for a slightly higher speed and road blocks and diversions, etc.
Obviously my favourite option is to install high capacity batteries and use option 3 :-) Please, rest assured that the 160km (100miles) battery option that I want will not get wasted, I intend to use them to their full and travel the UK !

I can tell you that you don't want thunder sky or GBS who use to thunder sky. Try Chi out of china. Or you can try CALB batteris. These are the only two companies that I am dealing with.

well the 70Ah cells are CALB
both the CALB, Sinopoly, and WB 40AH cells are all the same size physically
CHL 50Ah is a bit taller
Once you start putting more than 9kwh of battery in a bike, the cell quality doesn't matter as much.
with the CALB 70Ah cells, you have to be travelling above 65mph just to hit 1C continuous
My WB 60Ah cells are doing well, still give rated capacity at 1C if need be, and have done over 20'000km now.
