My XM-2000 just stopped working! left me stranded!.

I haven't modded it, changed it or done anything which would risk damage to this scooter. Just riding to and from school when it suddenly stopped working today. I was accelerating at about 30-35 and i felt the power simply stop. the lights, blinkers, horn, etc. still work, but the scooter hasn't been able to move on its own power since. I had to walk it home 2 miles form where it left me stranded...

Of course I'm going to report it, but i thought you all should know that after 270 km, my scooter simply stopped operating.

I'm thinking a couple of things off the top of my head to check first.

First, did you happen to tap on the brakes? The levers are known to stick if you don't lubricate them. If they're only slightly applied, it'll stop the motor.

Otherwise, are the stands down at all, even slightly? Like if you went over a bump, maybe one of them could have come down a bit. That'll kill the motor too. They've been known to be a bit sticky too and need to be lubricated.

Oh, and one other thing. The key has to be turned off and on again if the power's been cut. If I turn on the XM-2000 with the kickstand down, it's dead, even if I put the stand up right away. I have to "reset" it with the key for the motor to start.

I checked the kickstand, repeatedly putting it up and down fully. Didnt fix the problem. I had tried playing with the brakes all the way home as I walked it from where it stopped working, but I didnt think it could be that problem anyway, since I was accelerating when it stopped working in the first place. I plugged it in and it has a full charge, still no luck...

and to think i gave this thing a glowing review...

I can see this both ways. You do want thermal, over voltage, and under voltage protection for obvious reasons. Then again, if you can hit these conditions easily than this too is a safety hazard. Can you imagine if your escooter conked out in the middle of a long bridge? Yikes. It will be interesting to see if this is an isolated incident or a general problem with the XM-2000. Wasn't the last redesign of the Z-20 partially because the controller was running too hot?

Ok, new problem... Ever since hte scooter cut out and i got it working again, the scooter continually sort of cuts out after a couple miles of riding. It happens when accelerating, I can see the power gauge go all the way down to empty and then it cuts out. To get it going again, i just need to release and then pull the accelerator, but it will happen over and over again, preventing me from riding normally...

Any advice on this one?

Raynman,
I would think that from your description of the power gauge flipping from full to empty and back again that:

You're either riding when the batteries are low, like at the end of a trip,

Or, if they've been freshly charged, that one or more batteries is bad.

This behavior is caused when the scooter can't supply enough energy to the motor. If you instead pull more moderately on the throttle and see that it doesn't go into the red, then you know this is the problem. It can handle a smaller current, but not the full current. You will have to test the batteries one by one to identify the bad one.

What parts would you like seen under this warranty?

Speaking as a former scooter owner, what I would like to see is:

Lights, horn, brakes, controller, and motor.
If the bike becomes inoperable and unrepairable within the first year, not due to an accident, either a replacement bike (not necessarily new) or refund.
Batteries: 6 months/ 1000 miles replacement, 12 months / 2000 miles pro-rated.

I realize that you could take a bath on the batteries and would probably need to add some mark up to the price to cover it, but I seen battery packs that were babied and died within six months. To me this is clearly a sign of bad batteries, bad charging, bad arrangement, or some combination of all of them. Either way the batteries should be running strong after six months and should have some good life left after 12 months. Yes irresponsible people might deep cycle the batteries every so often and will have to cover them too -- hence the mark up. On the other hand a dealer should have enough confidence in the product to stand behind this rather vital component.

You might think these sound insane, but this is exactly the warranty I gave to the guy who bought my Emax. Six months later I had to pony up $500 for a new battery pack partially leading to my dismal opinion of Greensaver batteries.

Lights would not be covered.

Horns can go bad? I'd agree cover it.

Front/disk brakes, motor, controller I would agree could be under warranty. Aren't the drum breaks inside the motor? I'd have to see how those are designed and replaced first.

Batteries I'm not sure about. There would have to be some way to tell if they were deep-cycled or otherwise abused. I'd probably put in the PowerCheq/Charge modules before delivery. If I was to put in upgraded aftermarket batteries with known lifetimes, I may support that company's warranty, but not extend it.

Maybe this should be in its own thread...

Well I always felt the same way also, It would be interesting to see how many of our members use there EV only for recreation, vs how many as a alternate form of transportation. Can you help me create a Poll on the question?
There should probably also be several why questions, range, speed, safety etc.

I agree with John on this one. If you look back at one of my very first posts, I was having problems with that shifter (turns out it was broken, got it replaced and have never had a single problem with it since). I had read about the thermal switch in the manual and was going to investigate it further.

I'm the type of guy who'll read the manual before I even open the rest of the package. Others aren't like me. They like to test stuff out and figure out the features on their own. This very post wouldn't have been written if Raynman had read the manual. And judging from the protestations of the EVTAmerica people when they read my "R-20 Recall" post, the thermal switch is a standard piece of equipment that is a safety feature after all. Funny how the tide turns when their scooter gets lumped in with ours.

And as for UsaTracy, I think he sits there in his underwear, lights up a cigarrette, and starts typing. He can type VOLUMES. He's got a style about him, that's for sure. If he doesn't like something, he'll sure let you know. And vice versa.

He might be a quirky Republican who shops at WalMart and rides an electric scooter, but who cares? Better than the next guy who's NOT riding an electric scooter.

And we can tell that he's eminently comfortable with himself and obviously cares not about appearances. Nobody else would ride a scooter with a baby hitch hooked up to the back. What a riot! It takes a real MAN to be able to pull that one off.

You also create quite a colorful picture of a possible failure incident...

Considering that this breaker would blow at a high amperage situation, meaning a steep hill, at the worst possible time, It is an accurate scenario. I have a specific hill in mind near my house, and safety dictates I use such "what if" scenaros.

And I think that even infrequent stoppage - even just a few times a year, particularly one that happens right in a situation when you need power, would be considered intolerable to most people.

Or, maybe tolerable in flat areas, but based on the foregoing discussion, I couldn't recommend an XM-2000 for the Pittsburgh area.

It seem like a really dumb design feature. Why did the manufacturer simply set the controller amperage limit at a low enough point where the motor cannot overheat? also, considering that the Chinese manufacturers tend to deliberate under-rate their components to avoid warranty claims, I doubt the motor is actually reaching a harmful temperature, so the this circuit breaker can probably be simply bypassed and removed to fix the problem.

The e-max doesn't have such a circuit breaker and I'm running two of them at twice the stock power level, in the summer heat, without problems.

Gasoline explodes. Deer run out into traffic. Slippery when wet. Watch for falling rocks. No diving. Do not stare into laser with remaining eye.

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

So, when you buy your XM-2000 simply snip out the breaker and connect the two ends together and save us all the melodramatics... (err, no I didn't paint any pictures - that was usatracy who posted after me).

If you had a particular hill in mind why not simply say "I have a hill close to my house and I would find it unacceptable for an electric moped to cutout even once on that hill." You could even ask for advice whether or not this scooter or any other would be more appropriate. When receiving that advice I think it would be reasonable to weight those with direct experience over and above those who are hypothesizing.

Bypassing the thermal breaker on an XM2K or running an emax at twice it's designed power seems like a sure fire way to shorten the life of your scooter - which is a bad thing to do if you're an environmentalist. You should be making your stuff last as long as possible - people often overlook the cost of initial manufacture when they trade in their 3 year old leased vehicle for the latest and greatest Toyota Prius (whoops - there goes their carbon footprint improvement!)

Thats said despite hte problems im now having with the battery(s)... Hopefully, Xtreme will deal with this.

FWIW, this weekend I ran across a large country Flea Market just east of the Renewable Energy Fair, and they had a lot of Scooters for sale, several looked similar to the XM-2000, and the elderly gentleman was surprised by some of my questions. One was about the stopping problem and he said he had solved that problem with something he added. Since he knew I was from the City he wouldn't show me, but guaranteed it works. I tried to convince him he could probably sell it, and invited him to visit our site. He said he doesn't even have a computer with internet access, and didn't even seem interested in even attempting to get it. He did say he would pass the information along to his Grandson.

Initially it was our belief if we start changing subjects, then there could be many more request from other members which would be no problem. The new subject was about a thermal breaker fix but there was nothing about a thermal breaker fix posted after the request to change the subject. We waited as long as we could until we started receiving complaints from other members and viewers. Google had already indexed My XM-2000 just stopped working! left me stranded!, but the link was going to "XM-2000 stopping problem + thermal breaker fix" and after reading over 80 replies there was nothing in the whole thread about a thermal breaker fix, so new viewers were upset they wasted all that time and there was only over 80 off topic post for the subject "XM-2000 stopping problem + thermal breaker fix"
A new "XM-2000 stopping problem + thermal breaker fix" thread was created for the "XM-2000 stopping problem + thermal breaker fix" so viewers could easily locate the information.
My XM-2000 just stopped working! left me stranded!had over 1000 reads at the time, and all those viewers would have to re read over 80 replies again and still not have any information on the thermal breaker fix.
It's very time consuming to change the subject on over post, and our Moderators could be using that time doing other things like sleeping or spending time with there family, helping there kids with there homework etc.
There were several replies that were off topic, but the thread quickly returned to topic except for the "STOP PRESS: XM2000 thermal breaker works as designed..." which was moved to a new thread. When a thread gets this long, it's very difficult to relocate replies that drift off topic without loosing the natural flow of the thread.
We will reconsider and advise you by email of our final resolution.
BTW the "XM-2000 stopping problem + thermal breaker fix" is currently getting a lot of hits from viewers looking for information on the thermal breaker fix and I don't think it's there yet 13 hours after the request to change the subject.

As a matter of fact, I like the title the way it is. Someone having a major problem with their XM may hit this page and there is some good trouble shooting info as well as member contact info, so I would leave it as is, I, as an XM owner, am not offended that it say STRANDED, LET ME DOWN, I'M SO BUMMED"

I'm in complete agreement with usatracy, he is a very good XM-2000 resource person, and others need to know how to avoid the same thing happening to them, or be able to recognize the warning signs properly. This will also help avoid a lot of complaints being posted on the net
We are members of a V E Scooter Meet Up Group in the Ozarks, and last weekend several members had new XM-2000's, so when I recommended they do a Google search for xm-2000 stopped left me stranded to locate the thread, only to find the Google link went to another title about a fix, then read the whole thread I complained. I for one agree if you start just changing the subject after they have been there for some time it becomes very confusing, and the replies don't come any where close to the original subject. Many of us have another life we also enjoy, and don't care to waste time reading off topic post. I select the post I want to read by the subject and continue to follow that subject if I feel it's interesting.
Thank you again for caring about the other viewers who might feel the same way as I do.
Keep up the good work usatracy your a great asset both to this community and XM-2000 current and future owners.

For future clarification who do we contact about a problem, the Alternate Webmaster davew or a member of the Moderator Team?
