Bionx PL350HT XL SL and DC output for head light and GPS

Hi,

I just install the new Bionx PL350HY XL SL on my 2008 Dahon JXP, I wonder if there is an DC output device so the battery can be used to connect a Garmin GPS (Edge 800) and a B&M Lumotec IQ Cyo RT headlight of a Supernova E3 Pro headlight?

Just got the PL350 XL SL myself, and it came with a 6V connector on the battery rail. Don't know if it is standard, or just happened to be on the unit I got. It was an optional feature on the 37V units. It powers on with the console backlight, and is off otherwise. I asked my dealer how much current it can handle, but haven't heard back yet. My lights use a couple amps (2.5A front and 1A rear), and I suspect that may be too much for this socket. The connector happens to be the same size used by my lights.

I wanted to consider upgrading from my 350 to the 350 XL and was wondering if you know what the size change is from the 36V to the 48V battery. It appears not as tall; do you have the dimensions?
Also, I read of overheating issues with the battery; can you address this issue?

I have finished my first week commuting with the XL. It has been most enjoyable. BionX has most certainly refined an already highly refined ebike kit.

The battery is slightly smaller, in every dimension, I believe. The case is more contoured (less flat on the tall end). The latch/handle does not extend as far, but is still easy to use as a carrying handle. Maybe slightly less comfortable to carry, but lighter, so easier to carry. The motor is noticeably lighter.

The console is now in two parts: the nicer, bigger display with much nicer edge buttons, but no integrated throttle, and a separate throttle that is on a very thin ring that can easily go between the hand grip and brake lever mount. The separate throttle includes separate + and - buttons to increase or decrease the assist/regen level. The throttle button itself is still variable, but there is not a big distance from out (off) to all the way in (full on). However, I use the throttle very little, and when I do, I usually want it full on. Also, the four buttons on the display can be swapped from the left/right sides (the labels for the buttons are in the display next to the buttons and swap with the button functions).

When I get home, the battery feels a bit warmer in areas than my 37V battery did, but I suspect the only difference is that the cells themselves may be closer to the outer case, making it easier to detect the warmth of the cells. Also, the XL includes a 6V (up to 2A) accessory socket and adding a continuous 2 amps draw from the battery for an entire ride may be enough to significantly reduce opportunities for the battery to cool between periods of high power use. I'm not using the light socket, but may start using it. Given that a 48V system delivering the same power as a 37V system (350W continuous) will use less current, the battery and motor should stay cooler, as there will be lower resistive losses in the cells, motor, and wiring harnesses, so I would expect all components to be cooler, on average.

Re: Bionx PL350HT XL SL and DC output for head light and GPS

Hi,

I just got my new bike with a PL250HT XL SL Premium, I also got the accessories socket, but I can't get power out of it.
Does I need to change something to activate it ?
I tried to enter the code 1970 that I found over the net, but it doesn't seems to change anything.
It would really be a shame to use battery lights with 48V under the seat.

Thanks for any help.

Press and hold the power-on button for a few seconds while the system is already on. The bottom of the display will then momentarily display Lights On (or something very similar), and your display backlight will come on, too. Repeat to turn both off.

Two things to watch out for with the accessory socket. First is the plug you use. I have multiple, almost identical plugs of the same outer diameter and length, but different center pin diameters. Your plug may have too small of a center pin to make contact inside the socket as did some of mine. Second, make sure your lights work at 4-6 volts and use less than 2 amps. Any more of either, and the port will not provide power.

I know how to power on the light, but nothing seems to go throught the socket. I tested it with a multimeter, but I still got nothing :-(
In the meantime, I had a feedback from BionX saying that the socket should be functionnal.
I will see with my dealer if something is going wrong.

Thanks for your answer anyway.
