Im looking to convert a Batavus hs50
http://www.mopedarmy.com/img/gallery/Batavus_Restored_014.jpg
I want 45 - 50 mph top speed
Range of 25 - 35 miles
I was looking at the EMC-R kit for around 1100$ but that would only leave me about 400 for batteries and I would like Lithium ion
I was also thinking about a Delta wye x5 hub motor since the moped with the engine will only weigh around 70 lbs
What other kits are offered and can meet my specifications
What are the 101 options for lithium and what will I get out of it for each kit
Has anyone seen or done a dirt jumper bicycle motorcycle conversion?
Thanks any help is welcomed
Very nice old bike! Even though it has a real frame and suspension and brakes, I'd aim for a top speed no greater than 40-45MPH. That is the smallest drum brake I have ever seen on the front... You might also consider using a frame-mounted motor instead of a hub, with the existing chain drive. Hub motors have much less torque than geared motors. That would leave less room for batteries, but for this type of conversion you'd want lithium batteries anyway, and they are small and lighter than SLA. You might look for batteries from someone breaking up a pack, like the guy posting here now about that.
Damn, still no "edit" button. Never mind about the guy breaking up a pack and posting here - you don't want NiMH batteries.
Thanks
So is their a specific kit/setup i could use that will give me a top speed of 45 mph for this bike?
I don't know enough about the kits out there to answer. I was addressing general issues, like whether the moped can safely handle 50MPH speeds. It would be better than a bicycle doing 50, certainly, but I wouldn't want to have to slow it down from 50+ going downhill with those tiny drum brakes.
To get those sorts of speeds on a converted moped your probably going to need upwards of a 3000 Watt motor. Be it brushed earth magnet motor. I was going to suggest maybe looing into see what Ezip / Currie sells and just use the whole motor / wiring harness / controller from a donor scooter ( sometimes its less expensive ) But, I think the highest wattage on the motors they sell is 1000 watts??? They could have something higher now, though.. Google search it..
The scooters they make are little more than push bikes with an electric motor
45mph used to require ~4.5kw on my old Emax
How fast do you really want to go?
You can get a motorcycle class hub motor from enertrac that will take 10kw continuous
you will need batteries and controller to match for that kinda power though

Yea but that wouldnt leave enough for LIPO4 batteries
