This Site Is Bugged

This morning, AVG is telling me it's blocking threats from a site called i.skim.resources.com, using this site. With all the crap advertizing and spamming going on here it isn't a surprise, but it is worrisome. If this keeps up I'm dumping this site and I suggest the rest of you consider doing the same, unless they tighten their security and stop filling the pages with live links to other sites...

Looks like it's a widespread thing - same problem at gmail. I still meant what I wrote about this site's 'open door' policy towards links.

Dave seems to be on top of things deleting spam and other non pertinent listings. You might have to send David the URL to verify malicious sites. We all have to use site for EV use and Reikieman can't do it all. I dropped AVG in favor of using a MAC. MACs can't do viruses. At least not yet.

Re: This Site Is Bugged

I believe that script will be part of the skimlinks stuff I've installed on the site and it is perfectly safe

I'm always looking at how to decrease the number of spammers. But unfortunately that has to be balanced with making it easy for new members to join.

As for advertising, I do need to earn some money from the site. There are a zillion forum sites with advertising on them, so I don't see the existence of advertising itself as outrageous or controversial. Are you more concerned over the nature of the advertising or the amount?

I just made a change to settings on the banner ads that will decrease the number shown and should over time cause some of the low quality advertisers to drop off. If you have issues with a specific advertiser let me know and I'll see what I can do. The Adsense ads are generally highly relavent. The text links are ones I chose myself as being highly relavent to the purpose of this site.

Re: This Site Is Bugged

I'm still getting the threat warning. If the site really is benign (although with a name like 'I skim resources...) it should get removed from the next AVG update.

I'm not complaining that there is advertising, it's the sheer amount of it. This site can take forever to load and to change pages, and when it does it's often because it's loading ads from remote urls. Can't you go with a passive system that loads an image with a link embedded in it, instead of having the images load from the other sites? I've seen porn sites with better advertising management...

Two spam topics near the top of the forum list, AVG popping up warnings for every page. Screw this - I'll be back next week to see if you have your act together. If I get more free time maybe I'll start a free, ad-free site for EVs.

Instead of complaining - would you like to be part of the moderator team and be part of the solution?

That is, stopping the spam is the job of a group of moderators and we're jointly working to detect and unpublish the spammers. We could always use more eyes, belonging to people who are willing to work for the betterment of the site.

Re: This Site Is Bugged

I have to remember not to click on email updates as well...

I've done a lot of volunteer moderating (I ran a list serve for a non-profit for a few years), but it was either for non-profits or for sites that gave me something in return. I'm not selfish, I just don't believe in giving free labor to people who are trying to make money for themselves using it. This site has been somewhat useful to me over the last 18 months or so, but I've put as much effort into trying to help other people here as I've received help. I suggest you find a good Webmaster who will run the site for 1/2 the ad revenue, and concentrate your efforts on promoting EV conversions. But please, work on your proofreading - some of the stuff you wrote for the Rich EV Owners' site is... not so coherent. You're obviously rushing to do too many things at once. Now, once I find the topic subscription page, I'll be off for real, this time.
