When riding, i turn on the lights; & the scooter loses power.

I have a 750w 60volt (Chinese) Safari Scooter. When riding, i turn on the lights; no lights & the scooter loses power. If i turn the lights off; power returns like nothing is wrong. Anyone ever have this happen to them?
Tomorrow i plan on checking all the connections.
I'm in Washington State and it rains here, almost dailey this time of year.
I'm also wondering if water got into the light switch somehow?
The dealer doesn't have a wiring diagram and i can not locate one online.
I've been happy with the scooter so far.

Re: When riding, i turn on the lights; & the scooter loses ...

I recently had an email-discussion with another VisforVoltage user with a very similar problem. He discovered a problem with the keyswitch and some shorting due to the bike's frame having gotten into contact with something it shouldn't have. Turning the lights on shut off the controller, with lights off no problem

franzellin, could you please post your recent insights here?

Native One,
Do you have a multi-meter? Suggest remove negative battery cable/s , then use ohm-meter to check light and switch for short, or low resistance, to ground -- lifted battery negative terminal.

If the above test doesn't show leakage or short, you may have to use DC voltmeter to test while battery is connected.

A pair of clip leads could connect a spare headlamp bulb between disconnected battery negative cable and battery negative post. This will give visual indication when a short, low resistance, or heavy load is applied to battery - and avoid damage to battery during test. A wiring short will just cause lamp to glow brightly, and only a dim light with fairly low resistance leakage. No fireworks!

I think people are assuming the key switch controls the lights as well. If they are run from a separate switch, I'd check the controller's ground integrity first. If it has a separate 12 volt power-in connection, I'd check that too.

The key switch usually does not directly control the lights, but rather the DC-DC-convertor that powers the lights when they are turned on.

Florida has the same kind of wet weather problem.... bike looks alot like the xb650, which I have worked on before with the same basic problem. never found anything really wrong but when I took it apart and reconnected everything it worked fine again until it rained. So I reconnected everything and sprayed every connector on the bike with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust 11-oz. Leak Seal Clear Spray, Model # 265495 Home Depot Store SKU # 124636, $9.96 /EA-Each. After that the guy never had another problem with the lights stopping the bike.

Now I have seen a few E bikes get weird when the fuse for the 12 volt convert blew.... simple fix on that...change the fuse.

Still these are from another country with no documents on what is connected to what, so we are all just giving what we have found in our past.

Thank you for your comments: MEroller, LeftieBiker, & Jack_son.

Sorry i did not get back sooner.....

I road the bike today. Nice day and no rain...Lol!!! It runs well untill i turn on the lights. Its as if the Regain Braking system kicks in.

I guess i'll take the bike apart and check and test components and wiring the next dry day.

Does anyone have a diagram of DC converter and Regain Braking ???

Ah, now that sounds as if the side stand was extended. Usually there is a kill-switch on the side stand, and when the side stand is out the controller either shorts the motor phases or applies negative current, i.e. regenerative braking. These sides stand switches are known to have strange quirks from time to time, maybe that is where the search should be continued?

Re: When riding, i turn on the lights; & the scooter loses ...

well, there is a lot of guessing going on . lets think like an electrician , find the dc/dc convertor , it's a small metal box with wires runing from the relay and wires running to the dash were the light switch, key switch, turn signal blinker, horn may be found do you have pictures of this scooter? fallow the wires from the light thru the switch to ware all the 12V+ power is devied up look for a short (bare wire tuching the frame, other wires) it sounds like you have a short in the light circut that drains all the power that the dc/dc convertor can supply and the power relay shuts off shuting of the main power to the controler , while the lights are on. Show us pictures . LaTeR

Re: When riding, i turn on the lights; & the scooter loses ...

definately shorting out. start with tracing from your light circuit seems where to start to me also. i am also having an issue with my new 1st time build ,hello . i installed the e-bike kit today. i bought your 1000 watt setup. my power source is 4 brand new 12volt 12ah batteries . i have checked and rechecked all connections with a meter and are all fine. this is not my 1st e-bike build. the issue is very little power. when i press the throttle there is not much power in any range . and the leds on the throtle go from all lit up to barely anything . red light and dim yellow. when i lift the wheel off the ground and use throtle it does pick up speed. only when the weight off my bike is on it fully. even from a stand still with no one on the bike i use the throtle while standing next to it with no rider it barely starts to move. if i hold the bike barely in place with little presure the bike don't move at all . please help

Dlangy, what size wires did you use? To small and they restrict thr flow of current 1000w / 48v = 20A+ that calls for a no. 12 awg wire or larger to carry the load of the motor the controler will use a little more and if you have a dc/dc converter you have to count that in too. It"s probably best to use no. 10 wire for your needs that may be what you need to change. LaTeR ps. VxA=W
