Stoopid pedals.. but here's a solution

Well, according to the CBC Canada, a judge at the B.C. supreme court has just ruled that if you take off the pedals, you get charged for driving without insurance.. The case was brought forward by a claimant who claimed that the pedals"were dangerous", and as many people also feel that way, some of whom have had broken ankles in order to reach that conclusion, I certainly concur..
It seems , however, (and the judge agreed) that our laws have not kept up with the realities of electric transportation.. What is worse, is that someone driving one of these "scooter " appearing bikes, get hassled by BOTH the police (with the pedal situation), and drivers, who bitch and cuss at us, as we are restricted to 30KMpH.. what idiot kind of lawyer that this plaintiff had, that did not make clear that if his client was restricted by the manufacturer, and legislation, to pedalec speed limits, them by definition he must be riding a "Pedalec" .. however the judge ruled that cosmetic changes define whether it is a pedalec, not basic manufacture..
So if , as it appears, we MUST re-attach the pedals, I suggest that, although it may not be guaranteed to protect your ankles from bering crushed, re-attach the pedals aligned, rather than alternatd, as in a normal bicycle.. then at least you have alternate foot-rests, instead of just the platform.., and are still legal..
The law clearly ONLY says the "Pedals must be attached" it does not say HOW...

It appears that only the Moderator David can do it. Delete duplicates of course. One has to open up 2 windows and view it upon refresh. This way you know if it posts OK. The moderator goes by Reikiman and other names. There used to be a notice saying posting took. I do agree that pedals can make it sort of dangerous especially on a sharp turn. Where one has to lean into curve.

Oh, how glad I am that my jurisdiction (MD, USA) only looks at the HP and frame style to decide that my XB600 doesn't need a license. (Even worrying about a frame style is pretty silly, but history is history, unless you're Dean Kamen ((Segway)). )

On my earlier scoot, I actually looked forward to having the pedals -- until the first time I tried to use them. I have since taken even the chain off to save weight and mechanical drag.

in the province of Ont.MTO state the pedals must be affixed at all times and must operate.or deam illegal and must require a lic. and insurance.must not exceed 32kmp over a 2km distance. And not exceed over 500watts so now the 500 is now a 350 the 800 is now a 500+

Shoot! That means I have to fix my pedals, they are presently both facing forward and a little bit upwards and locked in place. They are basically foot rests now. I thought the law said the pedals need to be on and that you can use muscle power to move the scooter. Well my pedals are on and when I push the scooter I use my muscles LOL.

Re: Stoopid pedals.. but here's a solution

This is what I did this weekend to keep the pedals from turning by themselves. I put a hose clamp going around the pedal shaft and the cross member of the swing arm. I screwed the clamps has tight as possible and it keeps the pedals leveled. I tried it with a 15 km ride today and it worked. I might put a second hose clamp just to make sure the pedals don't move by themselves. This way it doesn't keep you from backing up and if you get pulled over and the cops want you to demonstrate that your pedals are functional, no problem. Might be a little hard to pedal but they do work.

That is one slick trick. And legally it is ok. I doubt they have anything that says you can't "stabilize" them.

An update on the hose clamp trick to stabilize the pedals. I've been using the scooter everyday for the past month and the hose clamps are still doing their job beautifully. I level the pedals with my feet when starting the ride and unless I back up, they stay leveled and off the ground when turning. It's nice to ride without thinking of those pedals.

Re: Stoopid pedals.. but here's a solution

mistercrash love it.i wish i could post pics hear but havent figured it out yet.
however on my profile pic there is a $50. gio slammed, raked, chopperized bigger motor,controller...since the mock up of bike ive moved the pedals to the front on the footboard.and have found a neat tool.it is a half inch extention.but slide a coller back and then pivot 90 degres and use it as a breaker bar.now if i fab a shaft from these slide the coller forward pedals are operational, pull the coller back the pedals can fold up onto the foot board.they are attached to bike and operational.folding pedals are legal.how about folding pedal assemblies?Im going to try it out first and see if i can duplicate this and mount pedals in stock location and fold the assembly against the bodywork. to help visualize take a breaker bar or johnson bar, snap a socket on and it will swival.now file out a pedal center so it snaps on bar.it will swival?
same concept only the bar i have has a collar that locks it in position.Damn i have to figure out this new cell phone

Re: Stoopid pedals.. but here's a solution

yes but as the original post it depends on the rider.yes some dimwits ride down the center of the lane, run stop signs...
the pedals are a pain in the _ _ _ i myself have turned corner too tight and skipped the pedal off the pavement and bent them, tagged them off curbs, when i park the bike inside tag the door frame.Ok fine they now have the folding pedal which is legal.can they bitch about a folding pedal assembly? which folds the whole works against the body.simular to the rear foot pegs on a motorcycle.HUM i need to get gas for the welder.Get the blueprints out boys seems we have a loophole.

Thought i would add my installation, pedals successfully leveled, total cost 2.99,
