Merida controller troubleshooting

I have a Merida 550 that worked well until recently when the assist completely stopped kicking in.

My guess is that the controller is the problem in which case I am probably going to have to replace it with a controller/ throttle system-- does anybody know of any other options?

Another possibility is that the pedal sensor has stopped picking up the pedaling motion, but I am not sure how to test this.

The motor works-- I tested it with direct voltage.

Anybody have any success solving a similar Merida problem?

Curious if the front generator is required to make the bike function, ie. kicks in a board relay. My wire is broken going to the front generator and as far as I can tell this is my biggest suspect/epiphany. I would love confirmation.

The front generator is not required to opperate this particular bicycle, it is only used to provide power to the head and tail lights, and only when and in proportion to the rotation of the front wheel.

I have the oppisit problem. My motor runs as soon as the connector to the motor is pluged in as if I have it stright wired. It will run even with the throttle unpluged. I got a new controller and it doew the same thing. I'm at a loss. Thanks for any help. It is a brushed motor.

Re: Merida controller troubleshooting

To my knowledge no electric bicycle produced by Merida has a throttle. Are you sure that we are talking about the same product? You can test for if something in the controller is "locked on" or shorted with a continuity meter or ohmmeter, just measure the corresponding positive and negative wires for near zero Ohms or whatever signal your meter uses to indicate continuity. You already said that you got a new controller, try removing it from the bike (possibly the whole electrical system) and test it without being on the metal frame, the wire that the controller switches may be shorting through the frame.
