New project

Ok so any help would be appreciated on this. I have a 2007 with a dead lithium pack ( I got it that way.) It was converted by vectrix so it has the lithium vectrix bms and firmware. It has the gold charger as well. I cobbled together 130 volts of batteries and a lightbulb pre charge resistor and fired it up. It starts ok and ready stops blinking once the kickstand is up. Ready starts blinking if you move the throttle which I assume is because of the codes. It's displaying some codes which I assume are because it can't talk to the bms and also perhaps the temp sensors since they aren't there (laying in a bag near the bike doesn't count apparently.) the codes are;

No ES
L 000
H 000
NoFeF 3
No E5 (which really looks like an upside down F not an e)

Since I can't find anything the same thickness as the lithiums that were in there I've decided to not use the bms and instead use the mini bms since I found 24 minibms nodes and a head end I had laying in a drawer so I only need 16 more nodes. (Looks like I can send the bms to you matt once Ive got it all Sussed out)

So, anyone have any idea hot to tell it to ignore bat and bms issue (if indeed that's the issue)

Thanks dex

Dexion
no tS = no temperature sensors
L000 = lowest cell is 0V
H000 = highest cell is 0V
No FEF3 is a CANbus signal that the controller expects from the BMS
Basically..you dont have a BMS.

You could wire out the stock BMS to each of the cells.

Ah, ok then. Thanks for the post. You wouldn't happen to know of a diagram or manual for the bms and temp sensors would you? I'm not getting much on searches since bms generally pulls up what they used for the nickel cells. I see a few going bms free. I'd like to see if the bike runs ok before getting more cells if possible. No way to have it ignore the errors and that leaf cell build is interesting as well. I can get cells from a leaf so the stock bms wouldn't be usable there. I suppose I could get 40 3 amp cells to test or even to spoof a full pack if I wanted to use the leaf cells heh.

Re: New project

So I'm a bit,confused. It seems many people have lithium conversions without the vectrix bms or indeed a bms at all. See Paul's 90 ah conversion for instance. Can someone chime in with the trick?

Not at all. All lithium batteries should have some kind of balancer (BMS).
In a battery pack the cells have different internal resistances. After some cycles, the battery gets completely unbalanced, this leads to the death of the weakest cells.
You can use the original vectrix electronic BMS , or any other kind of electronic or "mechanical" BMS balancer. Pauls conversion uses "mechanical" balancer, with 3 NIMH cells on top of every li module.

Basically we change the firmware to run lithium without having a BMS tied into the bike's CAN bus

the problem with the Runke chargers (which you have) is there is no compatible firmware revision for them

so your options are leave it as is, or get a new charger

Re: New project

Hello Dexion, Antiscag, R...
I made a lithium conversion without Bms with a Runke charger, but my Runke is for Nimh battery. I know that the Vectrix technical can upgrade the old Runke to a new revision for lithium, and I think that is possible to reverse the new Runke for work without Bms. My conversion have now six months and 9500km and my cells are perfectly balanced without Bms and without manual balancing. My cells are 42 thundersky 40A and I can drive more than 80 km. All battery in serial mode have the same load and the same charging process. why want you that the voltage is not the same in all cell? My revision for the motor controler is MC_1019 (112KM\H) and for charger BC 3005. Dexion, I think that you can try the upgrade with 18 leaf cell, just upgrade your charger if you found someone that he can do it.

Re: New project

Thanks for the responses. It's not how the pack works or doesn't without the bms but how the bike is happy with the lack of canbus bms communication. Sorry I wasnt clear. I got a couple answers as to what firmware to use now thanks everyone. However with the auction coming up I'm going to try to get a pack or two of lithium cells which are what's supposed to be in the bike. I'm starting a new thread for the auction to see if anyone is going to go in person. Perhaps he/she could help those like me who can't make it.
