Enjoy the speed.

Dreamhost - our hosting provider - started offering SSD based Virtual Private Servers. I'd moved V over to such a server a few weeks ago, but that didn't help much.

What I just did is install a MySQL server on the VPS rather than use Dreamhosts MySQL servers. THAT's fast.

Hurm.. not 100% fixed yet. I got a timeout on posting this ... but for a lot of cases the site is gonna be lots faster.

Test reply...

edit: Nope - this post still took a long time to load - "ending in a page not found" as usual. But the web site itself now loads fast.

edit again. well the initial post loaded slowly as usual, but the edit to the post went up lightning-fast.

Forum reading is quite a breeze now :-) The posting though still is painfully slow, but at least it eventually worked without timing out...

It certainly seems to be responding very quickly indeed now, which means I no longer need to waste valuable minutes of my life every time I visit the site just waiting for pages to load.

What a welcome relief, well done David.

I'm going to keep debugging the issue why sometimes posting is slow. The new server setup is letting me rule out database speed & configuration.

Please let me know if there is still slowness in making postings. I just turned off a module that turns out to have been related to the slowness, made a couple test postings, and they went right through. But as we know, the slowness is not repeatable behavior.

Posted a reply to another topic earlier and it uploaded almost instantly.

Let's hope you've managed to cure the delayed posting problem for good.

I just hope that module doesn't need turning on again.

Re: VisForVoltage now mounted on a rocket sled

Here's some data showing website speed over the last two months or so. The data comes from Google Analytics, and is collected from the Google webcrawler. It downloads about 4000 pages a day and they measure some statistics in addition to all the text and stuff that's captured.

Screenshot 2015-01-29 at 08.57.30.png

Between Nov 2014 and just before the Dec 2014 line it shows the average page download took 2000 to 2700 milliseconds. By itself that's a long time, and the site had been like that for a long long time.

In late November - must have been Thanksgiving weekend - is when I moved the site to the new SSD based servers offered by Dreamhost. They were supposed to speed things up, but as you can see from the graph it got a lot worse. At its worst the page download time went to over 12,000 milliseconds.

Then on Jan 16 is when I set up the local MySQL server inside the VPS. Previously the site had been running off a MySQL server run by Dreamhost, which gave us the bad performance we saw previously. What Dreamhost told me is that database server and the new SSD based VPS were on opposite coasts, giving a long long latency on database queries. Drupal runs lots of queries for each page load... really bad.

But, on Jan 16 and following the page download time is now running at 280 - 380 milliseconds.

Thanks David again for your endeavours, they have really brought some life back into this forum! Despite posting still not always going glitch-free, things have truly improved here :-)
