Built-in ICL in Li+

Hi,

Today I have opened my battery pack (Li+ 42Ah), and realized that the main fuse (200A) has a small circuit below it.

The circuit is as simple as two pins (contacting fuse bolts) and one resistor.

Yes! It is an ICL!!
So this means I don't need to make the bulb trick each time I connect the battery.

Thats interesting... Mine did not have this ICL. May it be usefull to build this on my own and install it before reconnecting. Seems to be the better alternative to the "bulb trick", but does it have any disadvantage having this connected all the time? What resistor is needed?

The resistor would only work as an ICL if the fuse was already removed prior to the battery being reconnected.

When the fuse is fitted, the resistor would be doing absolutely nothing as it would be completely shorted out by the Low resistance fuse, so connecting the battery while the fuse was still fitted would not protect the controller against the current surge upon reconnection of the battery.

If the main fuse was to blow at high speed, is it possible that the resistor could prevent the generated voltage from rising too high and damaging voltage sensitive components in the controller, simply by maintaining a very low current circuit?

As i'm hoping to get my new motor controller next week i want to build an icl like this on my own. Could you please post a higher resolution Pic or tell me what resistor is used? Or can maybe anyone else tell me?

I haven't measured the resistor, so I can´t tell you the ohms it has.
I think that somebody with the right knowledge can translate the resistor colour-code.

Any resistor between 100 to 270 ohm (2-5 Watts) would be safe for connecting main power imo. Charge current of the capacitors on the MC board will be between about 1,45A (100ohm) to about 0,5A (270ohm). (I=U/R)

A company called Zeva makes a compact one http://zeva.com.au/Products/datasheets/PrechargerManual.pdf . I got one for my Vectrix but I haven't installed it yet so I don't know if it would work. In addition it would require installing a latching contactor switch ( http://www.gigavac.com/pdf/ds/pp/gxl14.pdf) between the traction battery and motor controller.
