New 30kwh leaf modules

First pictures of the new 30kwh leaf battery.
The new modules are now packed in groups of 8 cells, 2P 4S (2 old modules).
This configuration kills the 19 module configuration, but every serie now contains 75 Ah, 11,25 Kwh in 9 new(18 old) modules

These are getting easier all the time to install and deal with,I think these cells have solved the vectrix battery problems.

Re: New 30kwh leaf modules

I recently bought a new leaf battery from auction that was damaged in shipping to the dealer. I wanted to post the modules I have for sale on it on here but I guess I don't have enough points in the forums yet. So these new modules are pretty much just 8 cells instead of 4 like in my leaf battery? (pic below is mine)

Re: New 30kwh leaf modules

Yes, thanks R for find and post! I do wonder though why Nissan has repackaged in cans of two? Maybe the former cell blocks are no longer individually canned, but only in that outer shell? Then Nissan would save 2 x shell sheet metal wall thickness per cell pair, thus allowing more active material into the given Battery shell geometry.
Which gets me thinking: is the higher capacity really only cell chemistry-based, or ist it mainly caused by making each pouch a tad thicker and getting rid of some of the canning in exchange??? The higher battery mass somehow is indicative of more active material on board, or is it more due to higher desnity materials used? Speculation abounds...

Re: New 30kwh leaf modules

MEroller is right, with this construction Nissan replaces 2 metal walls: more free space + less metal weight allows more chemical mass per cell, increasing Ah in the same space.
The chemistry will remain the same, but the construction of the modules is cleverer.

Re: New 30kwh leaf modules

Does anyone have the dimensions of the Leaf cells, old and new? Specifically I am looking for the terminal spacing, bolt size etc.
Thanks

Re: New 30kwh leaf modules

Bolt size is the same as on the OEM NiMh battery, if I remember correctly. Sorry, don't have the pack open to measure. Specs here: http://hybridautocenter.com/HAC4/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=72&Itemid=631

The pics there show the 2012 version, I think. The 2013 and 14 look a bit different and have a slightly tweaked chemistry, but dimensionally are the same.

The folks at Hybrid Auto are very helpful, I'm sure they'll answer other questions. I'm pasting their specs here:

The battery contain 48 modules - each with 4 cells

MODULE SPECIFICATIONS

4 cells in module
Construction 2 in-series pairs in parallel
Length 11.9291" (303 mm)
Width 8.7795" (223 mm)
Thickness 1.3779" (35 mm)
Weight 8.3775 lbs (3.8 kgs)
Output terminal M6 nut
Voltage sensing terminal M4 nut
Module fixing hole diameter 0.3582" (9.1 mm)

CELL SPECIFICATIONS

Cell type Laminate type
Cathode material LiMn2O4 with LiNiO2
Anode material Graphite
Rated capacity (0.3C) 33.1 Ah
Average voltage 3.8 V
Length 11.417" (290 mm)
Width 8.504" (216 mm)
Thickness 0.2795" (7.1mm)
Weight 1.7624 lbs (799 g)

Edit: here is a loooong thread at Endless Sphere about the leaf cells: https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=52162&start=100

Here a visual comparison between old and new 30kwh double modules
LEAF_batteries.jpg
These modules have 82Ah!
Rumours talk about Nissan launching a 40kwh version soon, which would fit inside same space... nearly 100ah!

Re: New 30kwh leaf modules

I doubt that the entire increase in capacity is due to packaging space reduction. Lithium cell energy density has been steadily increasing for years, so it would be very Odd if 2016 30kwh Leaf cells had the same density as the 2011-2015 cells. I'm also guessing, though, that if the 2017 40kwh rumors are true, that this new battery takes up a little more space in the existing platform, and won't be backwards-compatible. They may have decided to use the otherwise empty spare tire space under the rear deck, and simply stop supplying Leafs with spare tires to Australia and the few other places where the car has one.
