Any other sources for Nissan Leaf Cells?

In the US, is there any sources other than Hybrid Auto Center for Leaf cells? While there pricing appears very competitive, shipping (especially coast-to-coast) takes a really big bite.

Anyone on the East coast?

Thoughts people?

Thanks

Re: Any other sources for Nissan Leaf Cells?

Bought mine from salvage yards. - In Norway.
There are quite some demand, so I used "auto notify". -When a crashed Leaf was published I ordered and paid the whole battery at once. 12500 NOK, about 1500 $.
The rest can easily be sold. I shared with an other Vectrix owner. - But a normal sale would your conversion very cheap.

I'll buy one too, if it is the same year as mine (2013, I think). I think having 19 in the VX1 is slightly better than having 18 and the incremental cost of about $100 for one more pack isn't too bad...

Don't have any links since I live in Sweden, you have to call/look/ask around in your local area. :-)

Re: Any other sources for Nissan Leaf Cells?

I've pretty much answered my own question....

Found GreenTech Auto on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/usr/greentecautohybridspecialist?euid=d00ff624b2784007b46f9fe43b8c4995&cp=1). Ordered everything from them for substantially less than Hybridauto in Las Vegas.

See - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nissan-Leaf-Battery-Lithium-Ion-Module-7-6V-64Ah-/222085937236?hash=item33b55a7854:g:0iAAAOSwpoJXDrxz

I contacted them and they were able to provide the hardware and busbar like Hybrid Auto does.

Now to just find the time to install everything

Re: Any other sources for Nissan Leaf Cells?

great price, congratulations!

Keep in mind there are 3 types of leaf cells, the old 58Ah, the heat resistant, improved 64Ah cells and the 2x combo of 75Ah.

Your cells are the 58Ah type, in summer don't park in the sun, and recharge in the early hours of the morning, that's all, it is a great battery!

The seller said they wee 64ah modules. I haven't unboxed yet, but will advise when I do. Pretty sure the picture was just a generic shot for eBay.

The first generation Leaf cells are indeed easily degraded by heat, but they are also degraded a lot by time, unless kept exceptionally cool. The second and even third generation cells were *supposed to be* much more resistant to heat, but in real world driving they degrade in high temps about as fast as the first gen. The difference seems to be that the newer cells will degrade less over time as long as the temps are kept moderate. Sitting at an indicated 100% charge (actually about 95%) seems to also accelerate degradation in all Leaf cells to some extent.

What does this mean for Leaf cell converted Vextrix owners? It remains to be seen, but I suggest that we find ways to monitor the temps of at least a couple of cells in the center of the pack, so we can see how hot they get in various riding conditions. I drive a 2013 Leaf, and have been following the travails of Gen I leaf owners as well as discussions of how and why the packs degrade. One additional thing I would suggest - and I'll be doing this - for Leaf-Vectrix owners is that we keep the packs at significantly less than an indicated 100% charge when the bike is sitting around unused. I charge to 100% right before riding when possible, just as I do with my electric bicycles with Ping lithium packs (and with my Leaf, of course), and try to leave the packs at between 40% and 80% charge when they are not going to be ridden immediately.

Re: Any other sources for Nissan Leaf Cells?

I think those are good practice rules for almost all Lithium-based rechargable cells. But I did hear recently from a bettery expert from the German KIT (Karlsuhe Institute of Technology) that cell types with manganese on board degrade quicker when at mid-SOC and should be stored either at 90 to 95% full or 10 to 5% SOC for longevity. Go figure...

I don't remember whether or not Leaf cells contain manganese (I think they may) but even if that is the case, storing them at mid charge has proven to be better for these particular cells than storing them at a high state of charge. I don't know of anyone who has regularly kept their Leaf at 5-10% SOC when not in use, but I wouldn't suggest it. It does seem to be the case that charging to 100% nearly every day is ok as long as the charge is used soon afterwards, so Leaf-VX-1 owners shouldn't worry about cycling them a lot, just about getting them too hot or leaving them fully charged, especially in warm weather.

To quote Johnny J from further up/down this thread: "Salvage yards?" I am sure there are salvage yards in Italy too :-)

Re: Any other sources for Nissan Leaf Cells?

In 2015 in Italy, Nissan sold 390 Leaf ... much less the previous years ... find one to be scrapped is very difficult.

Yes, I know Vectrixparts but the price is high, although it is a complete kit.

I wanted to save money with DIY...

Thanks for the answers

Re: Any other sources for Nissan Leaf Cells?

Only 390 Leaf this year? That is really little. But Leaf has been on sale in Italy for several years already, so I think it is at least worth a try with the salvage yards near you...

Do you have a link/source for this?
Curious since I bought an E-up recently and they seem to have this battery type.

No Johnny, sadly not, it was a live presentation, I would have had to record it with a video cam or such. I was rather flabbergasted about that manganese part, which is why it got stuck in my long-term memory. But maybe I took note of his email address, as I have a set of 24 GBS LiFeMnPO4 "40"Ah cells with no really useful life in them that would require proper disposal, and in case I couldn't find another way to rid myself of them he said I could contact him. I need to go search now...
EDIT: I found his email address and asked about possibly published studies on this Manganese thing. Will post here if and when I get an answer.

Great!

By the way, I am really happy with my little VW, haven't even started my old ICE car since I bought the e-up 3 months ago.

Re: Any other sources for Nissan Leaf Cells?

Well Johnny, I did get an answer, but only a preliminary one: the gent is apparently up to his knees in some Intersolar business but will get back to me in more detail next week. What he did write was that his comments on ideal storage SOC of Li-ion with Manganese content was only for chemistries with high Manganese percentage. GBS LiFeMnPO4 apparently does not count here, but your E-Up! cells may very well qualify. As I said, more to come next week hopefully.
