PEAK Systems PCAN-USB

I have bought one of these before, but cannot remember which version; with or without opto-isolation?

http://www.peak-system.com/PCAN-USB.199.0.html?&L=1&no_cache=1&sword_list%5B0%5D=ipeh002021

Will I require to pay the extra money for isolation?

You do not need to be isolated opto. But you must be careful when connecting the laptop. You must not connect while the laptop and the bike network

Thanks, saves a few ££.

..do not plug the laptop into the mains whilst it is connected to the bike?

Re: PEAK Systems PCAN-USB
If you want to monitor charge process, remember you cannot plug the laptop to AC plug if vectrix is plugged to same AC plug, or it will fry up.

I also read the following in the first post of the latest may 2012 software instructions thread:

"Do not have the Bike charger cable connected to a mains supply whilst the computer is connected to the bike even if the mains is switched off. (this applies to a mains powered computer. It is safe to have a battery powered computer connected whilst the bike is connected to the mains power)"

I was not sure whether this would be a problem with a mains powered laptop, so I asked Matteo Zordan from Vectrix Parts, "Have you ever experienced problems connecting mains powered laptops while the charger is actually charging?"

He replied, "Yes you can connect the bike to the laptop using this cable while charging, no issue at all, the can bus is fully isolated at the bike side."

My laptops are always plugged into the mains when I use them to regularly monitor the charge process, and I have never had a problem with any of the three laptops that I have used with the Peak canbus adapter on both of my Vectrixes.

Re: PEAK Systems PCAN-USB

Laptop power/charging adapters provide the laptop with the same low voltage (a few volts higher for charging) DC power they use to operate, and they aren't grounded for this reason. It would be virtually impossible for the bike to "know" if the laptop is running on battery pack alone or the power adapter, because the adapter feeds the battery, not the motherboard, as I understand it.

Sorry for writing in this topic, being newly registered at this forum I'm not able to open other topic.
Is there any chance I can borrow Grid Connect canbus adapter for a FW update in my VX1 2007? I'm doing Leaf cells conversion right now, and hopefully just need the adapter once in my life.
I'm based near Sacramento, CA. Can make a deposit if any worries.
I'm also considering buying a used one.

Re: PEAK Systems PCAN-USB

The adapter will feed both, if you remove the battery the computer still works from the adapter. I have seen where the battery is SO bad that it converts all electricity coming in into heat thus pulling more from the adapter than it can provide, leaving the computer unable to turn on UNTIL the battery is removed from the computer.

Re: PEAK Systems PCAN-USB

A thread hijack I know, but I can't create a new thread. I'm in the UK and looking to see if someone can loan out a USBConnect?

Rickmansworth, Herts. Will be happy to compensate the owner appropriately.

Cheers

Re: PEAK Systems PCAN-USB

Are you able to make it down to Kent at all?

I have it all installed on my laptop, can configure it all for you etc, if that helps?

Re: PEAK Systems PCAN-USB

Very kind offer but I can't see how I can do that. No trailer or even a fitted towbar :( I'll scrounge around and see if I've got a mate with a towbar equipped vehicle. If that doesn't work out would you be prepared to post the adapter and cable/s to me? I'd be happy to pay all the costs, and indemnify you against any loss of or damage to the equipment. Maybe the smart way to do it would be to paypal you the replacement price of the part plus the postage and you can refund me the deposit when you get it back less the price of a few beers?

Cheers, Mel
