My 2007 bike started having this strange behavior every time its been sitting for a few hours. A ratcheting sound from the gear. It goes away when I briefly drive backwards. Anyone heard this before? Any suggestions?

Yes, I've seen this problem before. The gear is fine, it has some relation with the encoder. If driving forward goes fine, forget about it.
