Any thoughts on charging with inverter

Has anybody tried charging their Vectrix with a large battery bank and an inverter? I realize there would be wasted juice in the conversion back and forth, but short of designing a custom charger, it might work in a pinch.

Also, I wonder how the electronics would handle it. Would the inverter need to be a full or modified sine wave inverter?

Thanks,

Matt

I tried my 48volt 1200watt pure sine wave inverter but it tripped out the circuit breaker after about 5 mins? I was using my old nimhi batteries from the vectrix ( two banks of 42) these are beening charged during the day with two solar panels

Re: Any thoughts on charging with inverter

I have been charging my Vectrix with a 2600w selectronic sinewave inverter, (Aussie made)
supplied by a 24v, (8 100amp 12v Trojan batteries) connected to 3.2kw solar array
I charge only during the day as the battery bank capacity is too small
to complete a full charge on its own without depleting
I have been charging once or twice a day for 3 years now
No problem so far..
I would not use a square wave thou, it might overheat your electronics

Thanks much for the replies. Take home message: LARGE battery bank, >= 2500 watt pure sine inverter.

Re: Any thoughts on charging with inverter

If you use custom firmware (search for The Laird) the bike will only draw 800 Watts so you can save on your inverter.
At the same time you are protecting your batteries from overheating. Sounds win-win to me!

Once you go EV, Gas is history!
