I have been reading about various types of battery-powered bikes for about 5 years ago on "V". Initially I looked at motorbikes and scooters while they transitioned from lead acid to Li-ion batteries, but I recently went with an e-bike that retians a bit of exercise (XB-310Li, which is the folding version of this series). I posted my considerations and first experiences in blog that may be useful for other novices (link below). I've replaced some (cheap) parts and have had no problems after 2-3x/week of use (9 mi/trip). The only issue was loose bolts, some of which were hard to reach (like those inside the controller case) and some tuning of cables (like derailleur and brakes). The bike is attractive looking and relatively inexpensive, so seems a great first e-bike. I'd like to hear about others' experiences, issues and/or any fixes.
My e-bike blog is at: http://vdpluijm.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-hybrid-bike.html
The bike with replacement parts is below (I will also install a 5" rise alloy handlebar instead of the current 3" bar).

I enjoyed reading your article about XB- 301LI and look forward to following the thread. What is the weight of the bike? How much do you weigh and what is you maximum range?
Thanks ...ChrisV

The bike weighs a little over 50 lbs. I am 6'2" and weigh 189.283657 lbs :-). Note that the folding bike requires a saddle height that may be too much for a person below 5"10; the non-folding versions place the battery elsewhere, so no restriction there. The range of the bike exceeds 10mi, based on my daily commute; it is rated at 20+mi. Note that charging takes long, with ~7hrs from fully empty to full (just experienced "empty" the other day). I bought it from FarBike: http://www.farbike.com/x-treme-xb-310li-electric-folding-mountain-bike/, and parts via Amazon.
UPDATE, 4 September 2013.
I made two additional modifications to my bike ...............
