BEIJING, (AFP) - China will initiate its first-ever nationwide "no car day" this weekend in an effort to promote environmental health and alleviate increasingly gridlocked urban roads, state press said Monday.
Residents in 108 cities will be urged to take public transport, ride bikes or walk on the nation's first "no car day" on Saturday, the China Daily reported.

I heard this too, but I took it as spin. China is trying to convince the Olympics that athletes aren't risking their health by going to Shanghai. Apparently the results were a bust. The pollution was worse on no-car day than the day before.
Still and all, I really like the idea in general. I wonder of the US would ever have the guts to try something like this?
"we must be the change we wish to see in the world"
Yeah, I also understood this was about the Olympics ..
I wonder of the US would ever have the guts to try something like this? This question reminds me of one of the pieces of data discussed by those who are proposing this Chemtrail story.
Chemtrails -- supposedly the evil government is spraying us all with chemicals using aircraft who are flying regularized patterns in the sky .. the only sound reason I've seen for these chemicals is someone ages ago had an idea for reducing sunlight coming through the atmosphere, that by spraying a metallic dust (?aluminum?) it would block some of the sunlight. Hence, the dust forms a kind of planet-sized reflector kinda like what you put in your car window while parked. The Chemtrail people claim these aren't normal contrails, and claim to see all sorts of effects in these contrails as proof ..
In any case one subplot they publish is that between Sep 11-15 2001 all air traffic was stopped, and during that time some pollution measures decreased in that period.
