I remember around 15 years ago when everyone was paranoid about Japan taking over the US, buying Columbia Pictures, Rockefeller Center, etc. That seemed to pass after the economy recovered. A lot of was paranoid and xenophobic. I would have prefered to see more discussion about the de-industrialization of America.
I think the concerns about China are valid but that the real enemy is ourselves. The information about what is going on is out there yet my local Walmart parking lot remains packed with cars. People are still running up their credit cards to buy gas for their SUV to go buy cheap imported plastic crap. The education and leadership and personal responsibility that are collectively needed to do the right thing for the environment and our economy just don't seem to be there.
I'd much rather see our nationalist paranoid hate mongering directed at people who make decisions in corporate America, like the real heros at Toys R Us who stopped buying the kid toy wooden blocks that were made in Wisconsin (already priced dirt cheap) to by them from a Chinese company all for the sake or realizing a higher profit margin. Why can't Lou Dobbs go after people like this?
I fear that the next economic down turn is going to be a real doozy for the U.S.
Why is it wrong for China to spend tons of money on it's military? We have spent much more historically to "protect" far fewer people. They keep some of their military spending and programs secret (weaponizing space)? So do we.
China has been invading a series of countries for one reason or another for the last 30 or 40 years? Ooops, that's just us. (although, of course, China did help North Korea and North Vietnam when they were invaded...by us)
I don't like that China is building up it's military. I'd be more happier if this money was invested in solar panel factories and other environmental positive products and services. But, if I was China, living in a world where the dominant country, invades other countries to secure it's energy supplies and begins threatening the countries (Iran) where my energy supplies are, I might begin to take steps to ensure that doesn't happen.
It is not in China's interest to attack America. We are it's best customer. Of course, this whole thing might have been avoided if we had of linked human rights issues to trade around 1980 instead of closing our eyes, sticking our fingers in our ears and going on a huge 20+ year WalMart shopping binge.
We have created this "monster" with our actions and it is only through more intelligent forward looking action that we can create a harmonious future.
That's one of the things about trade with China I don't understand. Many politicians and economists complain about the trade imbalance but no one is willing to consider increasing tariffs or duties. It's probably a little late for that now, I guess. But still...what gives? :?

(Yes, China threat. Sorry.)
Here's a Yahoo® Finance currency chart between USD and CNY: http://tinyurl.com/ypkj6a
Notice the drop on July 11th, 2005? Wonder what caused that:
Not that I care about international politics, but just up for discussion. :)

Also, did I hear a politician complaining in that video that China was trading fairly?
I guess the U.S. is the only one who should be able to violate anti-trust laws and get away with it.
Do you think the Iroquois Nation had a panel hearing to complain that the Colonies weren't trading fair?

Good points all - especially drivin98's.
Yeah, no trading fairly.
If you're going to trade, you have to stab people in the back.
