Transmission supplier sues Tesla

A company named Magna is responsible for the transmission in the Tesla. The same transmission which has been causing delays of launching delivery of the Tesla Roadster. A lawsuit filed by Magna on February 22, 2008 that alleges that Tesla failed to pay Magna for transmission work it accomplished. The suit, filed in the Superior Court of San Mateo County, seeks $5.6 million in damages.

Apparently Magna had recommended to Tesla they use a single-speed transmission but Tesla insisted on a two-speed. In Oct 2007 Tesla told Magna to transition all work and designs to Xtrac who would be designing an interim single speed transmission. And that Tesla now intends to do their own transmission design work rather than outsourcing such a critical piece of their vehicle.

According to the court records the proof of summons having been delivered only came yesterday, and there is a case management hearing in July.
