Does anybody know if there is a problem with mixing battery types? That is, is there a problem with wiring a 36V, 10 Ah SLA battery in parallel with a 36 V, 10 Ah LiPo battery? I don't see how there could be, but I thought I'd ask the experts.

No problem, but be aware that the packs start out at different voltages (li-ion has a nominal voltage of 37 volts, not 36), so you should use a diode to make sure the li-ion pack does not charge the SLA pack, and make sure your current demands on the li-ion pack do not exceed the capability of the pack. In general you should not use more current from both packs together than the li-ion pack is capable of on its own.
Maybe I should just install some sort of toggle switch I can throw when one battery konks out, to engage the other battery while isolating the dead battery.
Being a simple kind of guy, when I do this, i just unplug the drained battery and plug in the fresh one. It takes about 2 seconds and I don't mind a stop that long.
Be the pack leader.
