It does seem like hub motors are a major advantage for packaging, control and transmission reasons.
Does anyone know if there are hobbyist conversions (for four wheeled vehicles) using hub motors? Can a hobbyist even buy a hub motor?

Car sized hub motors are available. the car may end up looking kind of weird with two totally different kinds of wheels on it. Obviously, some quality fabrication work would need to be done to mount everything up. Would be an interesting conversion for an old sports car or kit car.

I also found a link a while back direct from Asia on a 5KW and 10KW hub motors that I can't locate at this time. A google search would probably find the same link. No minimum order was required.

Found the link. two of these 5KW hub motors would make a small car fly! Get it in the 10 inch size and put it on an old Mini.
