Can a hub motor be controlled by ON Semiconductor's MC33033 controller? The datasheet can be found at http://www.onsemi.com/pub_link/Collateral/MC33033-D.PDF. Figure 35 on page 16 is what I was thinking. This controller takes the hall effect sensors as inputs. It makes use of three transistors and three MOSFETs to control current and direction through the three coils of the motor. The speed is fully controllable and it even has current limiting built right in. They only cost $4.13 at Digikey which makes think a controller for a 500 watt hub motor could be built for like $20.
