E-Max new version - speed limit

Hi @all! This is my first post on this community.

I recently bought a new E-Max 110S and I'm very happy with it overall!

However, I'm trying to find information on how to remove the 45km/h speed limit. I searched this forum and found some instructions to an old version of the controller board. Mine is very different.

I attached to this post two photos of the controller board. Maybe that can help :)

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

Hi all!
I also want to buy an e-max 110S. I tried it a few days ago, but it is way to slow... Speedometer told me approx 46kmh (fully charged), but I checked with GPS and it was only about 40-42kmh. That's not working in the City, and it's too dangerous, cause everybody and everything tries to overhaul...
So I found this forum...

@rub: have you tried to open the "new" controller? Maybe there is some similar Jumper inside the new box, like in the old? That would be easy and you simply could try it out... On your Pictures the box is still closed, isn't it?

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

well I don't really want to open the controller... it seems it is embedded in a rubber like substance, and I really don't want to loose my warranty...

So I guess I'll wait for the warranty to finish :)

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

Comprehensible...
As I saw the pics first, I thought, there was some kind of cover over the Board. I thought, one could remove that. But you are right, the whole board is obviously moulded-in. Maybe the guys at emax did that because on the old Controller the capacitors sometimes loose from the Board...
I think, there is nothing more to do for us. Maybe this new Controller is programmed by emax and can only be changed with a special Computer-Adapter and Program. Anyway so it is written on an emax-Distributor-Website.
Sad that there is no Information about this new Controller in the Web :-(

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

I guess I found the french site Kevin mentioned:
http://www.e-max.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=71

But my french is very bad (even more bad than my english), so I had to use Google Translator. It seems that the fueg31-Guy (he has Videos on Youtube as well) did something to the Quartz on the Controller. It was hard to understand for me, but I think he changed the Quartz (about 10.x Mhz) on the Controller to a 16 or 18 MHz one. Then his 110S went about 48-50 kmh. Not really impressive and far away from a really de-restriction of the scooter...

But this fueg31-Guy found a kind of reverse gear and build some other interesting things on the 110S :-)
Take a look at Youtube and search for User fueg31.

Greets!

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

I have recently bought a 110s (in the UK from Baroni - sole UK importer) and expected I would be able to remove a link or something to take the limiter off. It seems that the new controller is firmware based so we are talking programming rather than electronics here!
From what I've been able to find out the program code needs amending to increase the speed limit value. Not been able to find out how to go about this though.

I had a look at a google translation into english of e-max.fr at posts from fueg31 but I couldn't find anything about derestricting.

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

you need a programming module to remove the speed limit.
The programming module costs approx 200E, and is available only to distributors.
basically max output frequency has to be increased from the standard 168Hz setting.

where you ride your bike, is it legal for you to go faster than the scooter allows you to?
on startup, what firmware version number is displayed (the module is different for every firmware, mixing results in controller failure)?
the controler and motor isnt as efficient at higher speed (pack voltage is too low).
combined with the greater power output needed to maintain a higher speed, the range suffers quite significantly.

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

Drove the e-max electric scooter 110S for first time this last week in the London UK. It performed really well. Yes it is limited to 30 mph but that is the City speed limit on most roads. Went past three speed cameras and for the first time I was relaxed and did not have to check my speed. Felt liberated! I was going along at a fixed 30 mph. If I needed extra acceleration the booster switch was great.

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

I own one of the few english ones wich is set to 48kph and it is nice to not worry about all the speed cameras. But a bit extra speed would be nice if u reed some of my blogs it is all most pointless trying mod the speed controler. im going to change to a kelly and may b a higher voltage. But first things first the hard part is changing all the electronics lights indicaters ect this is the easy bit(Done). the hard bit is the speedo. but my mate at the salvage yard thinks he can find a wheel which is a straight swap with a built in speedo drive. and stand alone speedo(happy days) Il up date as i go and some pics soon just tidying up some wires to the standalone dc dc converter

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

when you do this make shure that its a good make scooter wheel.
as there is a hell of a lot of weight over the the front wheel and bearing can collapse !!
good luck.

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

Fair point. Well at worst it will make a funny vid lol.At the moment i have a possible candidate it is of a honda touring 500cc scooter the axil is 2mm wider but the width is the same and the disc brake is very close so a adapter plate may(will) have to be fabricated. Reaming out the forks is simpole and be done in situ but when that is done there's no going back.I might wait till summer thow.It was -5 last night considering battery warmers? it was a bit sluggish but ok but thats a diffrent story.

(I use my scooter for work and do about 25 miles a day its given a stella performance so far but the cold worries me how cold can silicon lead acid get before they die) the scooter lives out side in a shed (small)might just cover it with an electric blankit (tuck it in at night). Any ideas!...

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

Hello Aidan,

this is offical from e-max themselves. A service bulletin.

MM-No.: 09-01
"Outside temperature < 0oC:
Move the scooter to a place with higher environment temperature than 0oC. Wait for a while to warm up the scooter (1-2 hours) after driving or parking outside and then charge the batteries on a place with >0oC temperature.

Outside temperature > 25oC:
Wait for a while to cool down the scooter (1-2 hours) after driving or parking in the sun then charge the batteries on a place without direct solar irradiation and lower temperature than 35oC.
Also don’t park the scooter in the direct sunlight because this can increase the battery temperature over 50oC."

Hope that helps clarify.

Kind regards

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

Hay Aidan, you could try what we do here in tha nort coontry 100W lighe bulb, old Tablelamp, blanket,or shipping blanket hang the light over the seet so's the bulb is below the batterys an dont touch the blankie! drape the blanket over the bike and turn on the light. CHECK it in ten min.! if it is getting to hot get a smaller bulb a 100W bulb down next to an engine and a blanket over the front and hood does the trick for a car out in the cold about -20%F if you can get it inside even a 25W bulb and plastic cover would do to keep the batt warm enough to charge LaTeR

thank GOD I wake up above ground !!!!

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

I would like to say the top speed is subject to the motor itslef rotation speed(RPM). you only can change low speed to top speed, however, faster speed reduce your driving range.

to the 10inch wheel, motor speed is 810rpm, can reach 65kmph.
to the 12inch wheel, motor speed is 760rpm, can reach 65kmph.
to the 13inch wheel, motor speed is 700rpm, can reach 65kmph.

the speed limit , it is the boost button in the right handle there, when you press it, it will short the circuit and add the work current to make faster speed.

so the simple way is to be short the circuit , so you don't need to press the boost button and will get the top speed when you turn the speed acceleration handle ( hall handle ) to full position.

kind regards

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

hi sorry but i don't really agree with what you are saying as
the wheel size is irrelevant as to the wheel size is 13" on these scooters and if you was to short out the switch to be on all the time all what would happen
is the scooter would get to the top speed i/e 30 mph a little quicker and thats it!! ho
it would not be as economical i/e if connected aprox 1/3 battery wasted but its a moving target as depends on lots of things
thanks kev

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

kevin is correct, the limitation is the controller.
it enforces a speed limit by way of frequency.
a stock new emax controller for europe is set to 168Hz max IIRC.

changing motor will not help (unless with fewer poles).
changing the controller is necessary, or reporgramming it.

unfortunately there are so many versions of the controller (software wise) that changing it is tricky at best.

Re: E-Max new version - speed limit

when i put for my cbt / compulsory training test this is a standard test for people who only provisional licence
think if you have a full car lince before 2001 cbt not needed unless insurance company requires this as i didn't need it but did come across lots that wouldn't insure me on this bases. but this was not a problem as i had a vectrix and only had a car licence so if i wanted to ride it with my son or girlfriend on the back needed to pass cbt and go for a full licence it was hard..
well in going for a cbt in hart of winter decided to not go for hiring a ice/ petrol scooter and did it on my emax 110s scooter top speed was 30mph well till it needed a new brain and when fitted 28 mph ?? but eventually hit 30 on the flat with red button pressed.??
well the company said that was not a problem as long as it would keep up with the slow moped and so all was well after we dug all the ice of the school play ground after an hour no more like two hours....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no money back swines tommy bee wont be advertising this poor poor poor company no patients poor instructions. bad training company ..well thats that grip over with
i got tol ad passed no problems but this scooter was dangerous been told at some points i was doing 20 mph was very slow to pick up but was told that the scooter was to dangerous for the road as way to slow it needs to at least do 30 mph this was one of the trainee freelance trainer so remembered this
so to conclude that the new brian fitted time fitted 1 hour seems to be atleast 2mph on the good side of slower than previously before
