An (Almost) Affordable Electric Car

An (Almost) Affordable Electric Car
http://www.greenbiz.com/blog/2009/12/09/almost-affordable-electric-car

It's an article about Coda Automotive - a startup led by Kevin Czinger.

Coda’s impressive array of backers includes Hank Paulson, the former treasury secretary and CEO of Goldman Sachs; Thomas “Mack” McLarty, Bill Clinton’s former chief of staff, whose family owns auto dealerships; John Bryson, the former CEO of Edison International; and Tom Steyer, the well-respected founder of Farallon Capital Management....Standing in the way of his goal is the problem confronting everyone in the electric car business: How to make a powerful battery at a price that won’t put the car out of the reach of most buyers. That, Czinger says, has been the focus of Coda. “All of our R&D and all of our capital expenditures went into the battery system,” he says. “We finally have the chemistry we need.” Coda developed the battery and owns the intellectual property.

Re: An (Almost) Affordable Electric Car

Based on the lack of responses to this post - can I assume that EV folks are not too excited about the CODA?

If not - why not? My guess is that it is too traditional in it's appearance. I don't think it's a bad thing - in fact I'm sure there are many people who would buy an electric car because it looks like a "normal" car.

Hopefully the folks at CODA are targeting their customers accordingly and are not counting on the EV "blogosphere" for advertising ;-)

I think most of the people on this forum are more interested in two wheelers than bigger EV's? Your choice of avatar ("EVBIKE") is a hint in that direction, eh ?? :-)

Coda is going to be in San Francisco in early Feb and I hope to see the car in person or at least talk with the people.

I think I recall John posted a thread relating to the Coda some time ago.

It is a shame that the more humble, but more succeful EV's attract so little interest. The large Jacobsen ride on golf course mower, Modec vans and utilities, airport tugs, small specialist vehicles made by the French manufacturer Goupil, and of course the Ford sourced, Smith Newton range of commercial vehicles. These unsung EV's are competing successfully, without subsidies, displacing on merit and performance the ICE equivalent.

Yup - Coda is one on my "eagerly watching list" - along with Detroit Electric. Isn't Coda a spin off of Miles Electric?
