Rewinding a dc motor to operate on lower voltage

Help with rewinding motors

I have 2 DC motors that operate on 115VDC. Each motor is equipped with nice gear reducer. I have no use for 115VDC motor. Can they be rewound to operate on 12VDC.

Thanks for any help

yes they can.

you will have to take them to a motor rewinder.

basically they will replace the present windings with 1/10th the number of wires of thickness 10x.

rewinding can be expensive, so unless they are fairly large motors (10kw+ cont) , it may not be worthwhile.

To my knowledge, voltage ratings often have much to do with how good the insulation is. Just try running them on 12 volts and see if they do anything. You might beable to acquire a dc voltage booster circut if they prove unsatisfactory.
