The "amateurs" converted a VW Beetle, added Thundersky LIFEPO4 cells, and got 300-450 km. range/charge.

Beat Mitsubishi in the race to cross Canada.

This just happened. Look up the UBC Electric Car Club's eBeetle which cost only $26K to build.
