pls help with diy ebike

hello all!

Im new here and my teacher just gave me a green light to do a ebike conversion as a school project =D

so it has to be cheap. free would be best but cheap is great.

I have access to a lot of large fan motors of the a/c type and was thinking about using a ac motor and an inverter..

anyone got tips about going the ac route?

as far as dc motors...

do 1000w rc helicopter brushless dc motors work?

i have a car window motor maybe that will work.

so basicly i want to go ac

unless anyone knows where to source a descen dc motor for cheap?

I'm guessing a car window motor is 100 watts or less. Does it say on it?

Well, if you're designing your project around whatever motor you can find, then you'd better settle for whatever motor you can find quickly. I'd like to suggest you find someone who busted up their scooter but the motor and controller are still intact, but I notice they don't always put what's left of a wreck on Craigslist, so I'm stumped how you could come up with it.

Re: pls help with diy ebike

Would definately not do the AC Fan motor, any 120v or 240v (in Uk) system is dangerous. Those shocks can kill

Personally I think all EV projects should be 60v max

The simplest thing to use is one 12v car battery and a car starter motor - you can pick one up for virtually nothing at a breakers yard.

You may need to build a fairly sturdy switch to throw the power on off as youll probably draw 100amps

Still that will be cheaper than a controller. Also at 12v its all pretty safe. Its the voltage not the current thats dangerous.

Thats why Im not fan of the Vectrix bikes, really it never needed to be a 150v system, the losses at 60v arent that much more!

Colin, your wrong!! Even a 9v battery will kill you if you are stupid enough to stick the two sharp probes into both hands!!! AC at higher voltage throws you away from the flash DC will burn right threw you . Your idea of a starter motor is good ask the guys at the wrecking yard for one that has a regular shaft ! (not one with the Bendix in it) you will need to find someone put a sprocket or pulley or rubber wheel on the end . Note make sure the motor is well fastened to the frame it will try to twist off!!!
