The value of continuing long-running discussion threads

In Re: X - Treme XM - 2000 (Continued) Oliver asked about that discussion thread which "seems to have died". There's an alternate view.. why do threads need to continue for a long time in the first place?

A long discussion thread is harder to navigate.

A long discussion thread usually contains several sub-conversations which could be (and really are) their own discussion thread. That makes it harder for people to find the sub-conversation because it's buried in a different discussion thread.

There's a common habit to make unrelated replies.. okay, we all do it, so it's a little hard to fight. But at the same time those unrelated replies can be their own discussion thread.
