EEStor, Inc. replied to me about a "battery" for my ebike

I emailed EEStor back in Feb 2007:

"Mr. Weir,

I have been anxiously following the wonderously historic "coming out" of EEstor for a while. I have been doing absolutely everything in my power to spread the word that there is a hope for our future in your EESU. I know you are trying out your EESU packs with the Zenn company. My question is when can I expect to be able to buy an EESU pack for my electric bike? I have a 720w hub motor, and I'm currently using six 12v 12ah SLA batteries (which is quite heavy).

Do you plan on getting your product out to other ev companies as well??"

Mr. Weir actually emailed me back:

"Mr. Rask:

EEStor, Inc. will be in production late this year or in the first part of next year. Contact me then we will see what we can do for providing you a battery."

I thought everyone would like to know. Good things are coming, soon!!!

Wow, incredible to get a response when you're clearly looking for only small quantities. Very unlike most start ups of this type. I tried to find more info but they are very secretive about details of any sort. You need to make sure you get one of these units and give us a report ASAP!

That gives them a little more credibility in my book. However I'm not expecting anything. Way too many disappointments.

Yep, I'm sure that the oil/auto industry is shitting their proverbial pants trying to buy them out or whatever evil thing they do. I haven't seen anything specifically about a fight between them though. EEStor has been in stealth mode. Have you heard anything?

I got a quote on a 48VDC 20 aH battery from them. It was about $1300.00 delivered. I'm wondering if I should have them quote a supercapacitor pack. What would 1000F at 54 VDC do?

By my math
1 farad = 1 amp-second of electrons at 1 volt.
1000-farad capacitor can hold 1000 amp-second of electrons at 1 volt.
1 amp hour = 3,600 amp-seconds.

54 volts * 1000 amp seconds @ 1 volt = 54000 amp seconds or 15 AHr @ 54 volts.

If you get the capacitor bank, make sure it has some active balancing technology and put it in a metal box, cuz caps can explode. If you short out the terminals, you'll get a tremendous spark, I'd be very careful. I'm thinking a prius battery pack would be more affordable and last longer then a lithium battery pack.

I just wanted to update this post and let you guys know that Dick Weir and EEStor is still responding. Looks like he won't be able to make me an ebike EESU for a while, which is great because their business sounds like it is really ramping up.

1,000F 54V?

E = 1/2C * V^2

E = 500 * 2916

E = 1,458,000J

1Ah at 54V is 194,400J (54W for 3600 seconds).

1,458,000 / 194,400 = 7.5Ah theoretical equivalent. Plus I'll take off 10% for whatever inefficiencies the voltage converter has in keeping the output stable throughout the cap's discharge curve, so about 6.75Ah equivalent.

Also, I think I've seen some of those particular supercapacitors in real life. That is going to be a HUGE pack. Like a couple of 100Ah SLAs huge, unless they've come out with something similar to EEStor's.

They are not that big - a 3300F @ 2.7V cell (three+ times more capacity than the 1000F unit) is 70 x 81 x 145mm. This is somewhat larger than their 20AH LiFePO4 unit but not that much. You could also suck it just about dry - you wouldn't ruin it like you would an SLA or LiFePO4. I have a topic on this forum about defeating/resetting the low voltage cutout on my Crystalite controller (that nobody has responded to at last look). I wonder how low an input voltage the controller would handle before the input current got too high. Also, one of my issues with any available battery is the recharge rate. Being able to sling current at it would be a major advantage.

YESA hasn't replied yet though - the point may be moot...

In EEstors favor is that the military is very interested in their new technology, and that may keep the oil giants from buying them out and burning down their plant. Lockheed Martin had dumped a lot of money into that company and has exclusive rights to the military uses.

YESA did reply but only to question my application. I used some of the information in this thread -thanks BTW ;) - I suggested quick base charging and efficient regen as reasoning and queried further on price and availability. I'll see what they say...
