Impossible Task???

After straightening out the wiring on my newly acquired electric "cargo trike" I still have one connector that is unidentified. How can I tell if it's supposed to go back up to the dashboard, to light up the stock battery gauge and/or the brake light? Is there a wiring standard color code. Or is it the proverbial "OOPS DAMN - I let the smoke out of another one" trial and (expensive) error method? It's this controller:

Controller02__Small_.jpg

I connected the multi-pin connector from the handlebar and the power in and out pairs and now have this one little two conductor plug with about 18 gauge red and black wires hanging loose doing nothing.

Anyone have any idea how I can find out what that pair is supposed to do???

Thanks for responses/guidance for this newbie....

Re: Impossible Task???

Hi I sugest you test the leads with a meter and see if there is a voltage ? If yes and it is 12V than it may be for lights ? if it has 4-5 V than it is probibly for a brake switch cut off ,or forward and reverce somthing like that ??? This is only a guess on my part and your expirementing Is all your fault that is my disclamer LaTeR

thank GOD I wake up above ground !!!!

Sometimes I overlook the simplest things. Thanks for the reminder. I've done electrical and electronic "stuff" for years, but this is my first e-bike type controller and I just insisted that it must be complicated. The basics here are that volts is volts, amps is amps, and like that!

So, it's just as you say. 12 volts on that pair would be a 12 volt supply for ... something. Power for what? That is immaterial at this point!

Finding 4-5 volts on that pair would indicate a logic control circuit of some sort. Thanks for the ideas. Motor power cutoff when brakes applied would be mighty handy, and both brake levers have switches on them, but they were disconnected sometime in the past. I guess it could be a reversing switch - I read about that somewhere, and it this "cargo trike" rig I'm working on that might be handy. There's another switch on the handlebar where the throttle was that looks like the horn switch on the other side. It is also disconnected, but I thought maybe it was a W.F.O. switch (Wide F***in' OPEN throttle) which doesn't seem too likely on a cargo hauler type rig. Any of those are possible, and maybe others "we" haven't thought of.

Bottom line - a little care and a voltmeter and I'm not likely to let the magic smoke out of the controller. And I AM likely to restore a feature to this rig that got disabled by whatever ignorant creature did the last round of "repairs" on the rig.

Thanks again, strawhistle! And all the best to ya!!!

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is!
