Re: How to build an Electric Sherman Tank

Nice guys finish last.

Bad day at school? What does that have to do with leaving a note? A pat on the back, a hand shake and a thank you are more valuable than anything. You dont have any idea yet what hell it is to lose your wallet and have to cancel and replace everything in it. Some things are irreplacable. It took me two years to straighten everything out after losing my wallet and some lowlife went crazy with my ID and credit cards. I guess you thought that I meant he might give you a monetary reward? No. You might have made a friend. He might be someone who could change your life. At 16, while I was working in that little hotdog stand for $3.25 an hour (minimum wage) after school, I did a favor for one of my regular customers, not expecting anything in return. A week later I was night-managing his little gold mine fast food mexican restaurant, making 3 times what I was making to start and all the mexican food I wanted to eat. He did always complain that I ate too much of his profits/food. A few years later he opened several more of those little gold mines, and one of them was 1/2 mine. Maybe the guy who lost his wallet owns a scooter shop.

Its not just what you know, but it is also who you know.

BTW, You have never built an EV? You should! Maybe not a 96V 1,000A racing bike with $15,000 batteries yet. You should learn to ride before you sit on a rocket. My son has about 10 hours dirt practice on my XT350. Do you own one? You said,

My YiYun will handle 100V already.

If you do, tell me about it.

Re: How to build an Electric Sherman Tank

Eh. I guess I happened to be in a frame of mind to think a smartass counter-quote would be clever. Sorry. I guess I could have left a note, but I'm really shy. :/

I do have a pair of ebikes, actually. There's a bit of info on them in the member vehicles section here, and detailed histories over on the Endless-Sphere. I call them the PackCycle and the S-Go.

Those build histories are pretty long, BTW (4 and 10 pages, respectively).

The PackCycle hasn't been used in a while (I think I killed a few of the batteries), and the S-Go got into a semi-bad crash which potatoe'd and split the join in the front rim and I've been working on a battery box ever since. I hope to have that back up very soon...

Re: How to build an Electric Sherman Tank

Hmm...I'd suspect it would be like trying to use regen on a PM motor that's stopped, so nothing would happen.

I believe that controller is a shunt-wound (aka sepex)? Well, I would have thought it would have worked like a normal sepex (though possibly not as well), but I guess frodus would know better...?

Are you saying I can or cant use a regen controller with my motor?

Re: How to build an Electric Sherman Tank

I believe you could, but the regen wouldn't actually do anything.

Regen works by boosting the BEMF from the motor higher than battery voltage, so they start charging. Without a magnetic field around it, an armature doesn't produce any BEMF, so it can't do regen. Since a series motor's rotor and stator are linked, you can't have just the field coils excited, so the rotor can't produce any BEMF.

Re: How to build an Electric Sherman Tank

Sir Popeye,

Looks like you are overqualified to build an electric motorcycle. Hell, you have built two awesome Ebikes from the bare circut board up. Hub motors too! Has MIT contacted you yet? You should be building Ecars. Just call me Olive Oyl from now on.

Read the whole PackCycle thread, half way through the S-Go threads. Still trying to see the vids. Why are you wearing a helmet but your passenger isnt? You have the right to kill yourself, but not other people.

Thanks, I want to try one of those CC IQ controllers if it wont hurt the motor.

Housing update...

Moved the sprocket more towards the center for even radius force support, notched input shaft for keyway, 1/8" half moon keyway tack welded to input shaft so it cant move, notched 10 tooth sprocket for keyway, removed some material from unused input gear for more chain clearance, installed two new sealed bearings, installed new ring retainer clip, cut housing end down to size, reinstalled the two secondary gear shaft plugs, cleaned housing a little bit, greased 19 spline end and mounted housing onto the motor with three grade 5 bolts, flat and lock washers. Going to put two small spot welds on the shaft so the sprocket cant walk off of the keyway. They can be easily filed away if I need to disassemble the housing later for sprocket changes or maintenance.
Its finished...
hia.jpg
Theres about 1/2" clearance between the sprocket teeth and the housing so I can run a slightly higher/larger tooth sprocket for more speed. It disassembles in 2 minutes.
ha.jpg
mha.jpg
Housing fits onto motor like a glove with its inner ridge, perfectly centering the armature.

Tomorrow (3am now, uh, later today) I will start the aluminum motor mounts for the swingarm. The motor has 4 housing mounting holes (the 4th hole is not used because it is under the secondary plug on the housing) and the housing has two sets of three mounting holes. So there are 8 clock positions that the housing can be mounted to the motor. This will come in handy while fabricating the motor mounts.

Dont feel too bad, a month ago my son forgot to put the hood pins back on his '00 Mustang (We had to use hood pins because 5 months ago he pulled out in front of a car who had the right away and got the front end of his Stang ripped off and totaled the car. No one was hurt. If he had been 4' farther out in the way or on a motorcyle, he would be dead. The insurance company paid off, we got the car back and we put a Black Widow II custom hood and bumper, euro headlights, cobra fenders, cobra grill, etc ), well driving down the road the speed limit went up to 55 MPH, as indicated by the sign up ahead, he speeded up and the hood came up and crushed the windshield. He slowed down because he couldn't see and pulled over and ran over the damn 55 MPH sign, destroying the new bumper. Luckily, we hadn't painted the car yet. The windshield has been replaced and the Cobra-R bumper is on the way. Now he wants to ride a motorcycle on the street. I said learn to ride in the dirt for a year AND dont crash your car for a year, then you can get a street bike. Its hard trying to keep you kids alive. It was your fault... Slow down!

Eh? I've never taken any passengers on my bikes. I don't even have any way to mount the camera for on-board vids up yet...

Sprocket housing's looking good. Might have to use the same method if I ever get around to a go-kart.

LOL

You know, I still haven't figured out why the chain falls off like that (causing me to look down at it and then run into another biker turning the corner, for those who don't know the story). I will, however, be using the middle sprocket from now on.

I know Link, I'm friends with Link, and you aren't half the man or EVer that link is.

I saw one those videos on your PackCycle or S-Go threads. The vid is someone video taping a guy giving a girl a ride in circles in a cul-de-sac. The guy had on a helmet but the girl did not. I thought it was you and your sis or GF since it was in your thread.... Sorry, its a dad thing... nevermind

Sprocket housing's looking good.

So far, so good. Mocked up the right side aluminum mount for the swingarm tonight

The case on this motor is 5/16" thick. Can I electrically mig weld on the outside of it without hurting the motor? I really dont want to have to take it apart to weld on the case. I have used a set of ICE motorcycle motor mounts that already have the same arc as the motor case. I suppose that welding on the case will cause some electromagnetic quantum forcefield that will fry the motor?

Might have to use the same method if I ever get around to a go-kart.

I filed for the patent Friday. My lawyers will be contacting you if you do ;)

Did you build that 30MPH (deathride) skateboard yet? You think that AC unit hurt? Ride a 30MPH skateboard and you will find out what real pain is. Tighten up the trucks up all way (if it has them). Please dont do it though til I finish with this CR, I need your help to finish it.

I still haven't figured out why the chain falls off like that

Only be a few things can cause it:
Sprockets are not aligned with each other
Sprocket is not spinning true or is worn
^Dial indicator, laser level, or even a straight edge can be used to check.
Chain tension is too loose, too tight, or chain is bad

What kind of batteries are these?

Maybe someday I can be your friend and attack anyone who messes with you. Oh wait, I already did that :)

Hmm...hard to say. I wouldn't try it, as the heat might fry a bit of the insulation on the windings. Taking a motor apart generally isn't very hard, anyway, and since there aren't any powerful magnets in a series, they come apart even easier than others.

Most people have the mount designed so that the motor bolts to it, though. Easier to take on/off or upgrade.

LOL, sort of. I bumped up the G1 to 48V once, and it should have been doing around 25mph. Trucks were wobbly as hell (they weren't good to begin with) and the wheels were visibly worn and hot after a short ride. And I did have a minor wipe out that left me looking stupid but unscathed.

The A/C didn't hurt at all, actually. But I think I have a phobia of open wounds...on me, in particular...

Could be, but I'd never had any problems with it before. It would have been jamming up the derailleur if I was.
Sprocket isn't really true, but not by very much. I've had other bikes with worse sprockets not have problems. It's kinda worn, but no where near needing replacing.
Tensioner was good, and the chain was brand new.

All I can think of is maybe it got caught on my pants...? Tonight, on Unsolved Mysteries. :/

I could also put the front derailleur back on and jam it in place, I suppose. Might do that if the problem persists.

What kind of batteries are these?

PowerSonic PS-12180, IIRC. They're okay. I get them mostly because I have a local source, so I don't have to pay for shipping.

Re: How to build an Electric Sherman Tank

I have already made 4 "L" brackets to attach the motor to the MC mounts. So everything is bolted. Even the rectangular base support will be bolted to the swingarm. That way I can remove everything for the upgrade and change the mounting configuration. I doubt that I will run this motor more than a few hours, if that long. Just want to try it on "The Hill" then scrap it for twin Eteks. :)

I was curious about welding on a motor though. No way would I will take this or any running electric motor apart. After I put it back together, I would have extra parts left over and it would never run again. I have an electric phobia, love cottage cheeselike knurled flesh and blood though :)

Motor upgrade? Forget the Etek-Rs and LifePOs... Heres my (our) next motor

Drop this in a Hayabusa rolling chassis with 600 AC volts, a 90+HP controller, and a 12" wide slick!!!
Someday soon you will be designing motors that are powered by hydrogen fuel cells at MIT :)

the wheels were visibly worn and hot after a short ride

That means they were doing their job? Hopefully, they got really sticky too. Better traction equates to quicker excelleraton and handling (less wipeouts)... Oh wait, Im talking about drag racing slicks... EVers want no traction and no friction. Nevermind :)
It was a happy day when they invented hard plastic skateboard wheels and trucks so we didn't have to use old steel rollerskate shoe wheels and frames on our homemade plywood skateboards anymore. Im old!

Doesnt the derailleur also act like a guide to keep the chain inline with the sprocket, even when you aren't changing gears? Tape your pants leg our use a pants clip?

Oh, PowerSonic PS-12180, IIRCs are SLAs too. Batteries will be in phase 5.

Re: How to build an Electric Sherman Tank

Scrapped motor? Don't throw it away! Gimme gimme gimme! J/k but not really. :P

LOL, that motor weighs as much as I do. You so crazy. XD

By "visibly worn" I mean it looked like someone had run them against a miter saw. I really think they would be worn to the hubs within 25 miles if I were to do that all the time.

Probably right about the derailleur, but I never heard it click against the chain when I had it adjusted properly. Oh well. I can (a) avoid pants that would catch on the chain, (b) put it back on and jam it in place, (c) use the middle gear instead, or (d) not pedal.

I like a combination of (c) and (d), myself. :D

Re: How to build an Electric Sherman Tank

You can have the motor, but the cool custom totally tricked out phat stupid dope (Old english... Bitchen) patent pending housing end will cost $6,000,000... cash, no receipt

Chains and other moving parts at high speeds have a tendency to "harmonically" vibrate at the right frequency (speed). Even perfectly aligned chains and sprockets in perfect condition can experience harmonic excitation at a certain point if they aren't perfectly balanced. The longer the chain the sooner it will happen and the more warpage of the chain will occur. A dampner may be necessary to stablize the chain and stop the vibration. And, wear those freaky pencil-legged skater pants so you will look aesthetically appealling (referencing your painted wire problem :) ) right before you wipe out.

I like a combination of (c) and (d), myself

By definition, would that make it a motorcycle with cyclical foot pegs?

Woo! Well, I know a guy who SUPPOSEDLY has a golf cart, and I offered him like $150 for the motor and controller like a year ago. He said yes and then backed out later. However, I saw him earlier today and his excuse was that I never gave him money (his original excuse was that he decided to keep it and get it running again). So, I'm thinking maybe I'll offer him $300 for the motor, controller, pot box (accelerator pedal), wires, and transmission. Assuming he's really got a golf cart.

And, wear those freaky pencil-legged skater pants so you will look aesthetically appealling (referencing your painted wire problem ) right before you wipe out.

Given the gearing of the sprockets and that I only really pedal at relatively low speeds, I doubt it was harmonic resonance. Might just be that Wal-Mart bike gears suck. Oh well.

If I'm thinking of the right pants, then no. :P The painted wires were replaced with black 10AWG, and have just recently been replaced again with 12AWG silver-clad teflon wire to suit the brushless Golden Motor.

By definition, would that make it a motorcycle with cyclical foot pegs?

Eh...Technically, it's already a moped because it goes faster than 20, but not over 30. Now, after I rig up a boost pack to get bursts of 40+mph, THEN it's technically a motorcycle with cyclical foot pegs.

Gotta keep an eye out for the popo. :)
