Re: gear box oil

I am not sure anybody knows exactly what it is. Mr. Mik had 80ml of oil in his gearbox, mine only had 60ml. For a refill, I would add even more. I have been running a very light weight oil (synthetic) at a 120 ml fill--no problems. It is just a spur gear system so no special EP additives need to be in it. I would think a 5-20 or 0-20 synthetic motor oil would work just fine. Factory oil fill was black after 500 miles. Just a note for everyone---I noticed some water in the oil. The source is the seal between the wheel and the motor. Water came from washing the bike. If you lay the bike on its side for any period of time, oil will seep out of the seal area. Next time I have this apart I will see what the heck is going on and if it is just my bike.

Re: gear box oil

It might be overflowing through the vent whilst lying down.

I was told 85ml are needed, that was third hand info though, I cannot vouch for it.

Even when I had filled the box with 85ml I could only remove about 60ml next time. A lot stays stuck on the surfaces.

Re: gear box oil

No, it is not coming out the vent, neither is the water coming in through the vent. When laying on it's side, some oil gets into the recess behind the wheel bearing and when you put the scooter back up on its stand, some oil has run out of the seal area. The top of the motor housing where the vent is, is dry. When I washed the scooter (and the rear wheel) I was careful not to get any water around the vent but the oil had water in it anyway. The seal is designed to keep the oil in the gearbox and not water out. Again, this might be a problem with my scooter or something I have caused. However a word to the wise would be to keep a hose away from the area between the motor and the wheel. I'll take a look at it again next week.
