Remote control Kill Switch - Help Pls!

Hi Guys, Newbie's first post so bear with me!

I've bought a 250w 24v Jambuster scooter off ebay for spares repair, with a view to building my daughter a go-kart using the motor and controllers etc. Although we'll use it in a safe,controlled environment, as a neurotic, responsible father I wanted to put a remote kill switch on it so I can kill the power if she gets out of control or won't stop when it's time to go home! I've already used your forum to find out how to lomit the top speed thanks, so she will be safe.

I thought about buying a remote central locking conversion kit off ebay for £25, using one solenoid to pull on the brake cable, applying the brakes and simultaneously killing the power via the brake signal switch on the controller. Anyone tried this or got a different solution?

Before anyone lectures me as has happened on other forums, I am a responsible dad, she's perfectly safe as speed is limited, all moving parts concealed, safe environment, no traffic, thanks!

Depending on how fast the scooter is going, I think applying the brakes by remote would be a bad idea. Killing power should be sufficient.

Or... you could just let kids be kids. ;)

This ebay seller has a few different wireless remotes with various ranges and number of channels. You'll prolly have to interface a contactor(Hi-Amp relay) to it to handle the gokart amperage; I just looked at the 1 channel and its relay handles 3 Amps.
I just ordered a 200A Digital Ammeter w/shunt and a 0-100v Digital Panel Meter, both blue, from him. They're on their way by boat, fast one;) from Honk Kong.

Just realized how to get rid of the squirrels eating all our bird food; one of these remotes and a little 500v circuit(from geiger counters).
Was thinking about this for a bike theft deterrent as well.

Thank you both, but particularly Rossasaurus! I've just ordered a 4 channel RF remote from this seller in Hong Kong! He quotes $10us shipping to UK in 7 to 14 days so can't wait to get it now!!!!

One question though, maybe you can help. The speed controller I got out of the scooter has a connection on it called Brake, which connects to a micro switch on the brake leaver and cuts power to the motor when the brake is applied. I intend to utilise this system so that when the brake on the kart is applied it will operate the switch and cut power to the motor in the same way. BUT as this appears to be only a very thin pair of wires to this switch I assume it is merely a very low current/voltage signal that is being switched here. Could I not just use this signal wire applied across the relay on the RF receiver unit to switch the motor off, rather than switch the actual motor or power supply wires which are at potentially much higher currents and indeed, as you say, would need a relay?

Your help is much appreciated, and by the way, love the ideas for squirrel deterrent and bike theft. The idea of being able to charge the handle bars of a bike to 500v as the thief rides off and seeing him/her having to rapidly let go of the handle bars then crash the bike is hugely appealing! The mind boggles with ideas for these RF receivers in terms of pranks!!!!! I can see me ordering more..........watch this space!!!

Hi Chizzer,
As I recall, those receivers have both normally-open and normally-closed contacts on their relays, so you should be able to connect the controller 'Brake' lead right to the relay terminal once you determine which the brake switch utilizes.
FWIW, I just received my order today from that vendor and it came very well-packed and the quality looks good on the components.

THis thread is old but it needed a reply

Good of you point out you don't want a lecture just some help. I saw another such lecture on another site THis activity with the safety switch is far safer than skiing that my boy is doing at 4! I was however thinking of a recoiling tether like they use for dog leashes...to avoid those trees! Learning any skill has its risks at any age and wize parents can reduce those risks.

20 years ago I saw a child die as a result of losing control of a go-kart and driving under a pickup truck so I have had the same idea for children learning any motor sport SOme of the top F1 drivers started racing mini carts when they where around 5...this safety feature is an exellent idea from responsible parents such as us.

IF you are using an auto related alarm you just have to use a Bosh style 30A relay. All the 500ma transistor outputs from alarms are 12v (ish). Usually only high end units will have a "latched" output that would keep the relay energized (provided you have a battery source for the unit)....better idea as Off road vehicles usually don't have a battery so here is my suggestion. Use the trunk pop output from the alarm and connect it to a door lock actuator. Mechanically hook up the door lock actuator to a toggle or blade swich that will interrupt power to the ignition. That way there is still residual power as the engine is coming to a halt to make sure the brain can throw the switch. It should happen instantly anyways. You will have to manually re-set the switch every time but since there is no power once the engine quits then you would anyways.
