Re: Brake pad mileage

For info: Michelin GoldStandard are no longer manufactured. They are being replaced by City Grip. My local forum members recommend City Grip over Pilot Sports, because Pilot Sports are for high speeds and I tend to agree. Sports tires are usually good for high speeds and high acceleration, because they get their grip at higher operating temperature. If you don't drive sporty, you have, with sports tires, less grip than with the usual ones.

Just noticed some cracking/fracturing on the front disk. The V has 17K kM on the clock and brake pads look like new: I usually use lots of regen.

As you can see from the photo, cracks radiating from outside of disk cooling holes. Local bike shop guru has not seen similar damage on disks before and sugests the disk is probably still servicable but damage is a worry still. Front disk is a little noisy under brakes now.

I wonder if my recent riding style is to blame?
I have been using less regen lately when the battery is full, and also riding the brake a little to use up the last few electrons in the 'ride to battery light' part of the full cycle equalize routine.
Brake disk clearly has suffered damage, so I will not pfaf around with regen/discharge any more!

Cheers

I've seen this sort of cracking many times with cars, and it's nothing to worry about I'm told. It's not until a crack gets to the edge of the disc that it's a problem.

on a related note, i've noticed that if i hop on my bike straight after a charge and voltage is still high, regen does practically nothing. could it be that the software actually has some sort of protection to stop overcharging due to regen?? by the time i get to the end of my street and voltage drops by a couple, it's back to normal.

To aircon, regen braking immediately after charging is in fact reduced. I have the same experience with my vectrix (08, latest software). I guess it is in fact a built in safety measure to protect a fully charged battery from overcharging due to regen.

Cheers,

Norman

I've never seen this kind of disc damage before....

riding the brake a little to use up the last few electrons in the 'ride to battery light' part of the full cycle equalize routine.

If I understand you correctly, you ride the V with the brake pressed constantly to empty the battery? That would put the disc pretty hot, thermal expansion - contraction may explain this kind of cracks.

I tested the regen with 152v on the battery. It simply did nothing. As voltage dropped down during riding, the regen progressively gained more braking power. Therefore the battery is protected from regen overvoltage (assuming that all cells are balanced).
