Indicators Not Working

My indicators suddenly decided to stop working. Absolutely no response from the switch etc. Nothing else is wrong, stoplights, tailights etc all working fine. I know they are controlled by the ICM but given everything else is ok leads me to suspect the switch or wiring? Before I start pulling things apart has anyone else had this problem?

Re: Indicators Not Working

Perhaps try some electrical contact cleaner in the switch itself?

I periodically get a problem with the main beam flick switch. To get it working, I have to press it repeatedly for 5-10 seoconds, or spray contact cleaner inbetween the join of the switch housing.

Re: Indicators Not Working

If you can hook up to the CAN bus, check 0xF00300 byte 3 and see if a bit changes when activating directional. This will tell you alot about where the problem is.

Re: Indicators Not Working

Xvectrix, could you let us know what version of the software will allow that information to be displayed. I'm assuming a can dump.

Cheers

Chris

Re: Indicators Not Working

You only need a CAN viewing SW like PCANview which comes with the GridConnect adapter. The diags wont show you the bits in 0xF00300.

Re: Indicators Not Working

I've connected with Pcan View and it sees the PCan USB connector but not sure we are seeing the can bus. I am not sure what to do from here??

Re: Indicators Not Working

If you press "ALT" and "PRINT SCRN" simultaneously (instead of just pressing "PRINT SCRN") you can capture a screenshot of just the active window (the one that has focus) rather than the entire desktop, making it a lot easier for us to see the details within the active window.

Thanks Alan, that is handy to know. Even my IT man didn't know that! I'll get some clearer shots.

It needs to be 250Khz.

Re: Indicators Not Working

Yes. Thanks. Switched to 250 and suddenly was talking to the CanBus. Not sure if I know the language though. See (slightly) clearer Screen shot.

Could not see 0xF00300 though and no visible effects when I operated the indicator switch. Nearest was 00F00300h?Readout.jpg

Yeah 00F00300 is the same as F00300. Does anything in byte 3 change when you activate brakes, side stand directionals, horn?

Re: Indicators Not Working

X Vectrix, apologies. I have been away for a few days and was going to check on the weekend but now have a bigger problem. Dead Vectrix, stone cold. Coming off the motorway on Sunday, thankfully near home she just died. Complete loss of power. All the lights are working etc. everything looks ok, voltage is good (have the Lairds software) low but not near empty. Tried to go and she lurched forward about 2 feet then died. I disconnected and reconnected the the charger connectors but no change, left her for a while and then turned key , speedo needle swept around to maximum, shuddered and then everything went dark (in more ways than one). Absolutely no response to turning key, no lights, nada, and needle stuck at 6 o'clock.

I'll work through the possibilities and am pretty sure there have been some similar issues talked about on the forum.

Help!

Re: Indicators Not Working

No response fron the key = no power supply, First thing to check, the main fuse.
If it is 125A, replace it with 200A.

This is the fuse:

The amount of information inside the forum is incredible!
Hope visfor never goes down, but as we say here, "in case it rains", it would be nice to store a backup of all this data...

Re: Indicators Not Working

Thank you R. We have opened up and fuse is fine. Bike turned on but behaved erratically with various error messages. Now dead again. Conclusion is MCR ( this is second one to go).
Oh well.
Yes forum is and has been invaluable.

Re: Indicators Not Working

Ok, the fuse is fine, then I guess it is a power supply issue.
Second thing to check, the motorcontroller DC-DC. I'll post soon an easy way to check the DC-DC, in a post about a sudden vectrix death.

ps: I just managed to Backup the entire Visforvoltage Forum, that may be useful in the Future.

Fabulous!

How did you do it?

Re: Indicators Not Working

Thanks everyone for comments. back on the road again, problem was not the board but much simpler f-----d battery cells. At least two and probably 3 of my 35 lithium "cells" ( I am running Paul Paton of Australia's conversion)had died. Replaced and running ok. Why they failed is a mystery (to me) and a worry. But for now am back on cold and wet roads here in Auckland.

Re: Indicators Not Working

Problem solved, always look for the simplest solution. We tried another ICM but no change so it pointed to a problem with the wiring and sure enough. Broken wire where the wires disappear down by the headstock. Clean break. All the wires from the connector looked like they had been taking a beating so worth keeping in mind.
