Crazy idea...help me pimp this scooter?

I picked up a fairly heavily modified schwinn/currie scooter on craigslist about 2 weeks ago. I've torn it apart, cleaned up his dirty solders and connections, and put it back together. I do not know what model it *was*, but here are the original specs:
24v system
24v controller
24v, 250w chain drive
drum brakes in back
cantilever brakes in front

He added bigger better batteries, so now it's 48v at 10a, and now it has a 36v controller. (he was running it at 36v). It still has a 24v motor.

I'm being very very careful with this setup because I know the controller and motor can't last forever. It's fast though, I'm going to sat at least 30mph on flat with my 190lb frame on it. I melted the brakes on the first real run of 1 mile the other day.

I want to make it bad though, ignoring all safety and reasonable usage, but I'm new to this. I want to know if I attach a 48v 1000w or 1500w controller and a 48v 1000w, 1200w, or 1500w motor if I'll actually see speed/power increase OR if I'll just be less likely to burn it up.

I only need about 5 miles of total range. Really 2 would be fine---but I've got a bunch of steep hills, so I need torque.

Feed me your insight---I thirst for it. (Also installing one of the 80cc bicycle engine motors tomorrow, but that's not an EV...)

*inhales*

Ahh, love the sweet smell of voltage in the morning. }:)

If you plan on replacing the motor and controller anyway, see how much the originals can take. The 36V controller will probably fry in short order at 60V, but 48V will probably be fine.

The motor should handle 48V, too. 60V might be pushing it, but, hey, whadda ya gonna do? :P

5 miles range could be done with 7Ah batts if you lived in flat areas and knew how to drive it, but 12Ah would be a much better idea; they wouldn't sag so much and they'd last longer since you aren't discharging them so deeply. Assuming you use SLA, of course.

I didn't even think about moving up to 60v. It's already got a range of like 10 miles or so, I just want to make it *Faster.*

Would dropping in a bigger controller and/or bigger motor make it faster if the voltage stayed the same?

Controller: No. If you got one with a higher amp limit, it would accelerate and climb hills better, but you wouldn't see an increase in top speed.

Motor: Possibly. It depends on the motor's voltage constant. If you get a motor that has more RPM/V, then it will go faster. You sacrifice torque by doing this, however.

Re: Crazy idea...help me pimp this scooter?

All right, great answer. Thanks. What's killing me now is that if I (or anyone else) hits any major bumps the chain pops off, no matter how tight I have the tension. Resetting it means I have to take the entire real wheel off including the brake. Of course the brake cable's in bad shape and I don't care enough to replace it, so it looks like I might just not have a rear brake anymore. Lol!

Anyone have any solutions to the chain popping issue? Sprockets are in perfect shape, I'm thinking it's flexion of the motor mounting plate that causes that little chain to pop off the tiny sprocket.

Dunno. I don't know what the chain/sprocket setup looks like, so I couldn't say.

about the chain popping off...

why it happens

1 your sprockets teath are worn away.
2 if you had your chain for along time it gets strected out.
3 you might need to pull the motor and mount it farther from the big sprocket

I have had the same problem but i got a new chain and it worked like brand new :)

Re: Crazy idea...help me pimp this scooter?

I am all so pimping out my scooter i have a schwinn missle fs model 2005. it had a 24 volt 450 watt motor that went about 15-18mph. I have added a 48 volt 1000 watt motor i got for $121.00 on ebay (but the peaple on ebay got it from electricscooterparts.com) I've got a 48 volt 500-1000 watt controller for about $80.00. what was realy awsome i got some 12 volt neon rope light for under the scooter for about $15.00. Ive also got two crome 24 volt head lights for $20.00each.

problems I had... I couldn't find the right sprocket for the chain so i took my old motor sprocket and opened it up and welded it on my new motor.

If you want anything that i got you can get it all at www.electricscooterparts.com (but if you want the motor check ebay first) and if you get anything and have problems with it just ask me.

my scooter goes about 27-30 and im 110 pounds with about 100 pound scooter.

Re: Crazy idea...help me pimp this scooter?

What gears are you running on that? I won't get real technical cause I can't. But what I can tell you is I have a 1500 watt Powerpack BMC brushless motor, with controllers ranging from 55-100 amps on a I-Zip 1000 frame and chassis. The speed difference between 55 to a 100 amps was about 6-7 mph. Mine topped out at 39, according to the cop that radared me before pulling me over. So if your getting 30 mph, with the set up you have, I would guess your getting everything out of it and pushing the envelope quite a bit.
