Hi folks. I'm looking for a cheap 12v charger to use to charge a 12v 12ah scooter battery. I have a couple of these left over from replacing them in a 24v scooter. They're still good and I want to use them for powering my small 12v trolling motor. I don't have that scooter anymore...hence I don't have the charger...and the only other charger (besides the one for my 48v scooter) I have is a 6 amp automobile type charger but I'm afraid this might overheat them since I see most scooter chargers have about 1-2 amp output. Where can I get a cheap charger? Is my best bet just to buy a 12v scooter charger online and if so does that mean I can just cut the connector off the end and put a couple of clips on the wires and connect directly to the battery for charging?
Any help or recommendations greatly appreciated. I just don't want to pay much just to have a way to charge these small batteries safely.

I use a 12VDC 1500mA AC Adapter I got from Radio Shack and added 2 Alligator clips.

Thanks Gman for a reply. I think I found something that might work. It's at the following link...from Harbor Freight (HF is right down the street from me)

If you have a chance could I impose on you to look at this and tell me if this would be suitable? I'd be most appreciative. The price is certainly right!

gushar my first response is that's perfect, I might get 4 like that at that price. Then I read the specs. The float may be too high, I assume your talking about charging old SLA from a old Scooter. Maybe you should wait for someone that knows a little more than I do.
I believe this is more suitable for a Car Battery or a regular Trolling Motor Battery.
I'll fwd this to a EV Tech.

You want a charger like the one below that has a bulk charge. A float charger will be slower and less effective but is an option if you can wait a very long time to charge.

You will need to order the leads for $1.50 or make your own like I did.

jbird,
I like your suggestion better, It has LED indicates when charging and when charged
12V 1000mA Sealed Lead Acid Battery Charger
Input: 120V 60Hz 25W
Output: DC 12V 1000mA
Select wire adapter here (sold seperately - $1.50):

Female Cigarette Adapter
1/4" Female Spade Adapters
12BC1000D-1$13.45
Think I'll get 1 with a 1/4" Female Spade Adapters, if it works ok I'll get 3 more latter.

Gman-
Yeah...that other charger looks like it would do the trick. Course I may just buy the one I posted the link to...and just see how it works. I'm sure it will take some time if it charges...but I don't need it fast. Just so it charges in a day or two. Anyway, it's even cheaper at the store...like $6.50. Guess it'll be a $6.50 experiment.
I fish saltwater and freshwater...but more saltwater (brackish where a river comes into a bay) more often. I fish for speckled (sea) trout, redfish (drum), white trout, flounder, etc....saltwater. I fish for bass and bream freshwater.
Sometime, when I have time I'll have to post a pic of my "electric kayak" which turns alot of heads down at the docks!

See what the output is before you buy it if you can.
500 mA * 24 hrs = 12 ah (rough calculation) = 1 day charge
250 mA * 48 hrs = 12 ah = 2 day charge

I believe it's 600 mA...so that will work fine according to those rough estimates. I don't mind it taking a day or so. Thanks for the info!
