Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

it is surely possible for Erider Australia to pimp your bike too

That's it! Where's Xzibit!!!! He would probably cram in a few LCD monitors and a 3000w subwoofer leaving 1000w for the motor...LOL!!

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

The E-scooter manufacturers are way behind the motorcycle industry in this area. A 30 year old Japanese bike will have axle nuts with locking pins to keep them tight, and locknuts on just about everything else. I haven't gotten into the nose of my ZEV yet, but I *hope* to find loose nuts holding the front forks in place...

Excellent point LeftieBiker. Namely, like this

http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/t01blaze/chain%20and%20sprockets/chainandsprockets019.jpg

(Compare picture to that of the newer inferior tech. Thanks to op.) And as you pointed out, this is of a Japanese bike. (Suzuki being a Japanese brand. But who knows where it is really made now.) Chinese engineering: two steps forward, 1 step back. Not that great. But not that bad either.

Thanks for that pic Jason. It looks like there would not be enough room for me to even drill a hole in my axle. I will have to have a closer look.

I have some good news though! My HID light kit has arrived and I can pick it up from the post office at 4pm. HID kit is here but I am STILL waiting for my 72-12v DC/DC converter which was posted 16 days ago....

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Well my HID kit has arrived and I was impressed with just how small the kit is. It looks like it will easily fit in the scooter housing. I received an email today saying my 72v-12v DC/DC converter was out of stock and they can send me a 400w unit!!! Easily take the power but I'm not sure if it will fit?!

THE TEST: I connected just one of the kits to the H4 bulb connector on my scooter and connected the 12v input to my car battery and just sat the HID projector on the car bonnet.

Here is the HID kit

Now I can't wait to see how bright it will be with TWO HID kits installed!!

OK, now THAT is some serious lighting! My low beam is somewhere in between your stock high beam and the HID low beam, and quite acceptable at that, but those monsters are really awsome!!!

These photos were taken just using my iPhone. iPhone's take dark photos at night so the lights are a bit brighter than they look.

Good News!

My 400w DC/DC converter is on it's way, it's BIG though. 70mm x 140mm x 210mm. Same size as the 10A charger!!

The other good news is that the HID kit fits PERFECTLY in the light housing with NO modifications! only 1 cm to spare!!

I do have TWO of these kits but since I can't power them up, I am just installing one at the moment.

As in: day and night, or rather pitch blackness?! Great that the new lights fit so nicely! It looks a little stange though right now with one projector and one plain H4 light, sort of like a little bit cross-eyed :-)

Yeah...it does look weird, I will admit that too!! It will look better once both are in. On "parking lights" mode the HID's have a round CCFL white tube that lights up like on a BMW, then on LO or HI beam the HID turns on.

Are you sure that the stock DC converter cant handle both HID ligths if you take care of the startup ?
Maybe you can fit a supercap or a small 12v battery to help with the startup period ?

Hi Klas,

By the look and feel of the stock DC converter, it looks to be a very cheap switch mode with small caps. I would not recommend using it to drive anything that can have a power spike of up to 100w each. As for using a super cap or a 12v battery, I'd rather do it properly by have a 400w DC converter. 300w would be fine but they ran out of stock.

I have read Johnny J installed HID bulb in the reflectors (illegal in australia and not as bright) and had an extra 12v battery to help with startup current and even they blew up the stock DC converter after a few days. As an engineer I tend to over-engineer things, so they last. Companies sometimes want things engineered to fail after X months.

Ohh, forgot to add that it wasn´t the DC/DC that blew up, there was bad contact in a fuse, very strange and hard to find.
It seemed like the metal alloy at the ends of the fuse somehow partly lost their conductivity.

But I still think you are doing the right thing buying a better quality DC/DC.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

I was so happy to have my silky smooth scooter back I went for a ride at 10pm last night. 70km later I come back home and happy to report all is well again. Next time a service schedule comes up, I'll check the axle nuts.

So I now have 2,230km

Wait a minute.....just confirmation please.....you did 70km on one charge? You haven't done anything to that bike that would affect the range, have you? 70km is pretty good! Much left?

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Hi aircon,

Nope, all I've done is add a Cycle analyst to monitor the battery and count my Amp Hours used. After my 70km ride I had used about 41Ah so I probably had maybe 15km more to go. But I try and keep my max discharge to 40Ah or 45Ah MAX until I get a BMS. Nope, no modifications. The bike just runs smoothly.

The best I've done so far is 80.2km and I think I used 44Ah that day.

I did 67km today going to work then Xmas party in the city, then a golf day. All on a single charge.

Plus, don't forget I'm a BIG guy at 120kg so I'm getting bad fuel economy. My wife is half my size and uses about 25% less power. She could get about 95km on a charge.

That's pretty good. I assume this is at urban speeds? Not sitting on 80kph or anything? I've been contemplating buying one of these, but I suspect they're much lower quality than my Vectrix and not as powerful, but the lack of Vectrix support (in AUS) worries me and I'd love the superior range of a scooter like yours.

Of course, I could be completely wrong about the quality issue! I must go and check one out.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

I've never seen a Vectrix in person but they look pretty amazing quality. Everything on the outside of my scooter is pretty "Chinese" quality like the plastic panels that loose paint just by rubbing them a little while using a socket set. Then the dashboard looks straight out of a $10 bargain bin. And don't forget the headlights barely brighter than my wrist watch.

But, on the inside it's very different. High quality wire used and great quality CHL lithium cells with an awesome Sevcon speed controller. The seat even seems very comfortable too. As for after sales support from eRider Australia, I am very happy with that with calls returned in a few minutes and emails too.

As for performance it is no speed demon. I put it on par with a 70cc bike. In saying that I am not unhappy with the speed. As for cruising at 95-100km/h I can only get 60km. But that's 95-100 km/h on the speedo which is about 85-90kmh gps. A slight hill will slow the scooter down to a top speed of 80kmh or a big hill will slow you down to 70kmh, where your vectrix would POWER up the hill, this scooter keeps slowing down because it only has a peak power of 8.3kw.

But I know it's a slow scooter so I drive accordingly. Under no circumstance can this scooter hit 100kmh. It can't even do 99kmh with the rear wheel off the ground.

I've never seen a Vectrix in person but they look pretty amazing quality. .

Marzocchi forks, brembo brakes, comfortable. Pretty good finish and high-tech dashboard. Key operated hatches....they COULD have been so good!

Then the dashboard looks straight out of a $10 bargain bin. And don't forget the headlights barely brighter than my wrist watch.

But, on the inside it's very different. High quality wire used and great quality CHL lithium cells with an awesome Sevcon speed controller. The seat even seems very comfortable too. .

Well that's good AND bad.....but the good seems to outweigh the bad there.

As for performance it is no speed demon. I put it on par with a 70cc bike. In saying that I am not unhappy with the speed. As for cruising at 95-100km/h I can only get 60km. 70cc? Surely not. The Vectrix always felt like about a 400cc scooter to me, and the numbers I found on redbook support that. 20.2kw, 65Nm, 210kg. Speed limited (originally) to 102kph.

Yours is what, 130kg? That's a massive difference. Not enough that only 8.3kw would make it a very good performer though. I wonder if yours is speed limited too?

Very interesting info...thanks for that. I really should go and check it out. I'm "ok" with the 40ishkm I get now, although 70ish would be MUCH better, but with no real support I get nervous about what I'll do when it breaks down and am reluctant to do the Li conversion that's available for that reason.

Today the weather was really nice, 10C at the end of November, really strange.
First I was just planning for a short errand but I just couldn´t stop driving so I just continued for like 2 hours.
Forgot to look at the trip so I don´t know the distance.

I just have to say, this is the best electric scooter I have ever driven and I have had quite a few! :-)

Unusually warm here in Upstate NY, USA as well, although not exactly T-shirt weather. 63 degrees F when I went for a 40 minute ride on the XM-3000. Still, I enjoyed being out again.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Yay! Finally some good news with the HID's. I now have a tracking number and I can see the DC/DC converter is sitting at Beijing waiting to head over to Australia!! I am still a little worried about the size of this DC/DC converter, I am HOPING it will fit because it is HUGE!!

As far as the Erider 8000w scooter is going...apart from a loose axle nut, nothing has really gone wrong, all I do is charge it and ride. Lovely.

Because I have installed one HID projector (not powered yet) I am down to just one 35w halogen bulb running at 11.1v. So the stock DC/DC converter even has trouble keeping 12v running just one bulb with the tail lights etc. No wonder the bulbs are orange colour.

Dont know if the DC converter is not "up for it" maybe it is just not really calibrated and gives 11.1v even under no load ?
Or else it is really now well dimensoined if it cannot cope with even the few Wats one headlight bulb + backlight and speedometer draws...

My DC/DC unit can only deliver 13V at virtually zero load, but will quickly drop below 12 as soon as the lights come on. I don't like that either, but correctly adjusted my thunder's projector lights still give off a decent amount of it to make driving in the dark safe enough.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Yeah. I saw that Johnny J said his HID's didn't blow the DC/DC it was just a bad fuse connection. Still the stock DC/DC looks rather small for a possible 170w startup load. I haven't pulled it apart but by the weight of it, it may even use an integrated IC instead of proper Power MOSFET's. Either that or the small TO size.

Hey, MEroller, you said your "projector lights" are bright enough to ride safely at night. Are you using HID projector or are you talking about the normal halogen lights in the reflectors? Maybe they made the reflectors better in the "Thunder" model.

No Xenon/HID, just halogen, but with a projector lense like in your HID kit. A LOT better than your stock lights, that is for sure. But of course also significantly less bright than your HID conversion :-) Halogen projector lights where highly en vogue before xenon/HID took to the road.
I don't like oncoming cars with Xenon/HID lights, because they easily blind you even in "low beam". Despite the strict laws around here that HID lights need automatic height adjustment, not just static due to loading, but also dynamic in order to keep the beam low even while driving over road bumps. But in corners and curves the intense lighting of the (in our case) right side of the road will easily go straight ahead into my eyes in left bends (right for the oncoming traffic). Only lights that also shine into corners will get around this problem that still persists despite greatly improved HID designs in the mean time. The first BMW HID lamps where absolutely unbearable for oncoming traffic, because those where very small diameter lights with extremely high luminous flux. Pretty similar to your new HID kit :-)

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Oh!!

Yes my projectors are only 2" (5cm) in diameter because the normal sized 2.5" kit would not fit. Wow, did your Thunder come with halogen projectors? I didn't even know you could buy them, otherwise I might have tried them first. Well my DC/DC converter has travelled from China to Sydney yesterday so it should get to me by the end of the week. I will research what the correct light pattern is for Australia and aim my lights accordingly. My wife is already saying she want to buy a HID kit like mine and I haven't even installed it and test it yet!

I have now travelled around 2450km and still no major problems :-) The CHL cells still seem to be taking more and more charge because every morning (after a charge) the Cycle analyst reads somewhere between 0 and -0.6Ah. I wish I took note of all those extra -0.xxAh values. It must be about an extra 3Ah or 4Ah by now?!

Oddly, I rode into work this morning and took the normal route which uses about 4.2Ah slow driving or 4.7Ah zippy driving. But when I got in I noticed I had consumed 4.95Ah and I was just scooting along behind slow traffic. I thought I may get to work using under 4Ah because of the speed. The best I've ever done was 3.8Ah using a different route and going 50kmh all the way, and the worst was Monday when I was running late and stuck on 85-90kmh all the way and used 6.1Ah. Maybe one of my brake pads are rubbing? But on average I still get around 8% to 9% every single day riding around town. Even after my 70Km ride the other day, I racked up 11% regen so that 7Km extra travel for energy that would normally be wasted in brake pad heat is a good feeling.

"or 4.7Ah zippy driving. But when I got in I noticed I had consumed 4.95Ah and I was just scooting along behind slow traffic. "

1. How long is your commute? Does new light use more power? Ah is a unit of Power in Watts * Time /Voltage. 4.95Ah-4.7Ah = 0.25 Ah Converter efficiency =0.8? [(New watt light wattage - Old light wattage)/70v/0.8]*[(ignition on time)/hrs]=0.25Ah? Someone check my math probably making some stupid mistake here.

2. Did you over-tighten axil nuts? Or over-tighten bearings? Tricky balance.

3. Are the aliens definitely stealing power again. Rascals.

Ah! I noticed I drove in this morning with my headlight on. It's the normal 55/60w H4 halogen bulb. The lights use around 110w all up on low beam and 140w when braking. My commute is only 6km. With the bright sunny day today I didn't notice my lights were on. I have the HID installed but not powered up yet because I'm still waiting on the DC/DC converter.

I can't edit but wanted to correct 1 thing I did notice. Ah is a unit of charge not power.
