3 charge stations in Melbourne

Where are they?

https://www.chargepoint.net.au/index.php/authz/login.html

I certainly wouldn't call them 'convenient' at this stage!

https://www.chargepoint.net.au/index.php/device/devicelocation.html

At least it's a start.

Is there any E-car charging station in Australia which also open for your scooter ?

I am NOT proud to announce that the CAPITAL CITY of AUSTRALIA, CANBERRA has a grand total of....... ONE!

Yep, that's it...ONE!

It is across the road from my work, I have called up about it, and I am not allowed to use it unless I have a Mitsubishi MiEV. Plus it has a weird 7 pin round plug, simmilar to the J1772 plug but 2 extra holes?! No way I can even make an adapter box, and Better Place refuse to sell any adapters

Ok, so here is a photo of the plug used at Canberra's ONLY charging point. I think it's called a "Mennekes Plug". I think it is a variant of the J1772 plug.

Does anyone know how to make an adapter so I can plug in my normal 240v Australian plug?

Dear pcarlson,

Your repeated use of caps to file a complaint with your government was successful. Thank you. All complaints will be given full consideration. As you know, Canberra is an artificial capital, since the land in Sydney and Melbourne was more affordable to kind taxpayers such as yourself. As was explained on wikipedia, "The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities." As such, the population can afford cars, parking lots, etc., and there is no real reason to have multiple charging stations at your city.

Very Resepctfully,
Your Government

P.S. Thanks for the geography lesson regarding the name of your capital. Must have been reading SF the day. Oh. Does the plug really need more than 2 wires?

It's my understanding that at least one of the extra wires is to allow the charger to "talk" with the charging station, and that without this handshake the charger won't activate. You'd probably have to built a little AI for your charger to use it.

You think correctly, that is the Mennekes Plug, developed by a rather small German Company in the high voltage connector business that risked most it's capital on developing THE worldwide standerd EV-charging solution, capable of all currently discussed charging types. The English language website sadly is not up-to date, but the pic on the following German page is English enough concerning the pin designations. Bing or another webpage-translator might be able to help too:
Mennekes Type 2 charging connector
At least here in Europe it is quite obvious by now that the Mennekes design is safer and better designed than the French contender, but the centuries old rivalry between France and Germany is still stifling the standardization process in these quarters. That nonwithstanding, the Mennekes plug is already the favourite plug in many of the EV's coming to market right now.
But as you can see from the pic this plug is bi-directional and requires (at least for type 2 charging, what that single charging station in Canberra is expecting) some output from the vehicle to be charged in order to start the process. You would have to use the connector in type 1 charging, single phase and without further communication like your houshold plug, so you would indeed need more than just an adapter, it would also need to emulate the intelligence that the charging station is expecting...

I see your one, only for MiEVs and raise you Sydney's One. Announced with much fanfare, tv spots, photos of the lord mayor cutting the ribbon. "Australia's first public charge point" is actually only for a rental car company in Glebe.

So anyone in the public can use it, all they have to do is rent the car (a modifed to plug in prius).

Great.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Now at 2768km

I have a question for CHL.

I went for a ride today just for the fun of it. And after 52km I had used 42Ah out of the pack. What worried me is that under acceleration while pulling 109Amps the voltage was sagging to 70.2v and only 74v with half throttle which may be 60Amps. Is this still ok? The reason I ask is because I usually only see the voltage drop to around 74 to 76v under full load. I just don't remember the CHL cells dropping that low. Also when I got home after 43.5Ah the battery resting voltage was at 76.9v. The ride was pretty much all at 100km/h, hence the bad fuel consumption (94kmh GPS)

Anyway, I had a good ride around the city and got home fine. The bike still feels silky smooth while riding. I don't have any shuddering problems at high speed. I'm still bearing the EV grin :-)

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Phil, don't stress the battery that much yet without any BMS guards to watch single cells. The voltage sag you witnessed is about 5V above what my GBS40Ah cells do at a comparable state of discharge, so no need to worry too much yet. But the more you make such long rides without BMS the further your cells will drift apart, even if they were perfectly balanced in the new state. And the greater the danger that during such an extreme ride (43.5Ah of theoretically 50 is a whopping 87% discharge!) single cells will reach dangerously low voltages well below 2.5V. I would highly recommend not going above 25Ah discharge before recharging, until you get a working per-cell BMS installed.
And it may be time to go through your very familiar ritual of stripdown and measure all 24 cells half an hour to an hour after end of charge, so you can keep on eye on cell drift so far and if necessary push singel cells higher or slightly discharge too full cells to regain a certain balance in your as of yet anarchic battery pack :-)

Don't use voltage as an indicator of state of charge, unless voltage is above 3.45v, or below 2.8v

if the voltage is between 3v and 3.3v at rest, the state of charge could be anywhere between 5% and 90% (seriously I've seen cells have a terminal voltage of 3.2v, when just 5% charge remains, and other cells with terminal voltage of 3v when 40% remains).

If you must balance, do it top (or do it bottom).

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

MEroller, The problem with bringing down a cell you think is to high is that if the problem really is due to a difference in actual capacity of the cell (which it often is) then the only real solution is to replace that cell with one that's matched. See, if the cell is short a little capacity it will be the lowest at the low end, but the highest, first, at the high end. So if you take out power at the top, when it gets discharged it will be even lower at the low end compared to the other cells as a result. This is how a cell dies. It gets pulled down to low, loses a little capacity, then gets over charged and so on, until it dies completely. I guess my point is, the most revealing time is after you have run the pack low. ( which someone pointed out is best not to do without a BMS ) But if you do, you can then predict which cells you probably will be replacing next.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

True, the low end is more revealing and can be safer for the cells. However, the LAST thing I am striving to do with my battery pack is discharging it way down low. I want it to last me five complete years, summer and winter, so I cannot tolerate much degradation of my cells.
That said, I had to ride my pack down right to the BMS shutting it off compeltely due to a longer errand some days ago, and the pack collapsed at just 45km of mixed and pretty docile driving. The minium voltage was still above the 60V that the controller would shut off, but at least one cell balancer sent it's over discharge signal (below 2.5V) to the BMS which eventually shut off the bike - 100m before reaching home base and it's charging outlet... :-(

Oops, misread the first post, my bad

I find a single cell charger to be really useful with top balancing

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

MEroller,
I just replaced two dead cells for a guy with a stock 3500li (20 40ah cells) with 3145km on it. He drove it mostly around 30/40mph, he said, for a delivery business. I got about 4500km on my 2 xm3500li before I started losing cells, and I balanced mine using hobby cards and single chargers. I hope you have better luck. Things are getting better in leaps and bounds right now, it's hard to keep up. I love the quiet clean ride, but I'm not crazy about the battery replacement costs.

Iccarus,
does the XM3500li have no balancers/BMS to watch over the battery cells? 3000 or 4500km is much to too little for these still quite expensive cells :O

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Sorry for the off topic, but since it's such an active thread...
No, they have no BMS. I think it was just bad matching on the early scooters. At least that's what I hope. Other cells are still performing perfectly.

This is the system I use for regen. It's uses a 0-5 v thumb throttle mounted so it's like a trigger grip for your left hand. It's fully variable. I find it very easy to use. Just scroll down to see the picture.
http://visforvoltage.org/forum/6520-activating-regen-braking

If you ever notice that your throttle starts getting touchy or the regen brakes seem to be skipping or rough, check that the control connector on the Kelly controller is tight. Mine loosened up and I thought something was going wrong with the controller but eventually discovered that the connector was only slightly loose. I tightened it up and it was back to smooth and perfect. I'm using Kelly controllers also. I'm using a KBL12251 on one XM3500li and a KBL12151 on the other. The 151 has the slow start that you were talking about but 251 has great acceleration. With the fully variable brakes (20%-100%) I hardly use the discs at all.

Here's other things for new riders to be aware of http://visforvoltage.org/forum/6370-warningthrottle-brake-release

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Funny, with my 72801X and regen set to 18% even the instant brake-switch-induced regen is rather gentle, not just to rear tire, but also to the batteries that apparently are not too happy about constant and substantial switching between discharge and charge. But a more smooth regen control would be rather nice, I like your thumb-throttle approach :-)

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Update: 3090.1km and still going fine :-)

I just wanted to share with you all my trip from yesterday. This is the single most amount of distance I have covered in a single trip and best of all, I was not inconvenieced once because I made use of "opportunity charging" while I was out shopping. I did some shopping at Belconnen and charged up whilst shopping, rode over to WOW Fyshwick for a browse at electrical goods and charged up while inside. Rode to DFO Fyshwick and plugged in while having a browse and also got some lunch. Rode to Woden to have another browse and also charging up as I go. Rode to Tuggeranong and searched for nearly 30 minutes for a power point anywhere! But the only double I found was not accesable because of other parked cars. Riding back home I needed to use the toilet...back into Woden Westfield to charge up while I went inside. I got a call and also a list of things to get for a friend since I was down there so I ended up getting a good 1 hour charge! That's a good 10Ah! Then I rode over to my friends house on the other side of the city and then back home. I got back home with 34Ah consumed and 48Ah in regenerated power. So I still had about 16Ah until the battery went flat (in theory with a good BMS). So at the end of the day, I had ridden 104.2Km and just passed the 3000km mark!!
IMG_4404.JPG

I set out in the morning to search all of the major shopping centres in Canberra for free (un-disclosed) power points I could make use of. I am happy to report that all the shopping centres I use have them with one exception. Here is what I found.

Belconnen Westfield: 1 power point
Belconnen Caltex: 4 power points
Bruce University: 1 charge point (normal 240v 10A plug)
Exhibition Park In Canberra (EPIC): 24 power points
Wow Fyshwick: 2 power points
DFO Fyshwick: 2 power points
Woden Westfield: 24 power points
Tuggeranong Hyperdome: 2 power points

PHOTO'S
Belconnen Westfield: 1 power point - Just as you enter the main entry after the boom gate to the left in the motorcycle parking area. Management have given me permission to use it whenever I like, and any others at Westfield in Australia...WOW!
IMG_4394.jpg

Belconnen Caltex: 4 power points - A double to the left of the main entry near the ice freezer, and another double to the right around the corner on the wall.
IMG_4270.jpg

Bruce University: 1 charge point (normal 240v 10A plug) - Near Building 24 off university Drive.
IMG_4550.JPG

Exhibition Park In Canberra (EPIC): 24 power points - Outside of Building F where the hold the computer markets is a green power box with 24 power points.
IMG_4140.jpg

Wow Fyshwick: 2 power points - Just to the right of the main entry, up on footpath. Manager didn't mind, he was more interested in the bike and wrote down rider's website address.
IMG_4389.jpg

DFO Fyshwick: 2 power points - The ONLY power point I could find in the whole car park. Enter main entry and drive straight and in the far corner is the power box with a double power point.
IMG_4399.jpg

Woden Westfield: 24 power points - There is a power box in every corner of the 3 story car park and they all have double power points.
IMG_4402.jpg

Tuggeranong Hyperdome: 2 power points - No photo because power points are above head height and in the middle of the main car park, so unless you're lucky, you won't be able to plug in.

After this BIG ride, after I finished dinner and the movie on TV, I decided to go for a midnight ride up the steepest mountain in Canberra, Mount Ainslie. It feels steeper than Black Mountain...I may be wrong? Anyway I easily rode up keeping a nice and easy 50km/h because all the Kangaroo's jumping on the road. The HID lights seem to attract them? Once up I thought I would take a photo of the bike with the lights and Canberra in the back ground.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

I got back home with 34Ah consumed and 48Ah in regenerated power

Now when I say I had 34Ah consumed, that is the battery was at 34/50 Ah. Because when I ride, the Ah goes up, and when I plug in to charge the Ah count down. So I had actually used 34 +48 = 86Ah, but I usually get about 5% regen which is about 2.4Ah so that would mean I used 83.6Ah to ride the 104.2km.

I thought I'd clear that up incase it sounded wrong :-) I wish I could get 104km on just 34Ah!!!!

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Thanks pcarlson, I've enjoyed catching up on your thread. You have done a great job of relating your experiences with your scooter. I was reading with interest about you connecting your cycle analyst to the controller. If I had been reading when you first put it on I would have told you to use the magnet system that comes with it until you find out how to use the controller signal for speed. That's what I did, but I would like to connect it to the controller (I think). I saw you and others had to switch out resisters on your C/A, I had to do this also :(
Yes the midnight ride on a nearly silent bike is great isn't it. A couple years ago I was sitting in a busy intersection on my XM3500li, with a diesel bus in the left turn lane in front of me another car in front and another to the right. Basically I was surrounded by noisy belching tailpipes. I thought about how at one time it would have been all horse and buggies ( with the occasional coachman laughing and yelling at someone with one of those new fancy, but broken down, cars on the side of the road..."Get a horse!") Then I thought about what that intersection would be like if these were all electric vehicles. It would be a different place. You could hear the crickets again like you would in that intersection at midnight. I'm interested in the sevcon controllers but are they programmable? Again, thanks and please let us know when you get BMS as it is passed the end of November now and I believe that's when it was supposed to be available. Here's a picture of a pedelec trike that I built that is powered by two 8kw brushless motors!! 0-50mph in about 4.5 seconds.

Notice the large display CA built into the battery box on upper right trike, a major pain to do though! The headlight on the trike is from Aero LED http://www.aeroleds.com/products/landing-lights.aspx Expensive though. I've found I can make my own by buying the proper LEDs from Cree and am thinking about mounting some in my scoot.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Have you ever used the Kelly KBL user program?

I have watched my dealer several times already as we tested out a lot at the beginning to get to know the beast KBL72201 and it's limitations. I am not doing anything myself as I am most interested in keeping my 2 year warantee valid :-) Why do you ask?

Pcarlson, that was some excellent sleuthing (and documentation!) that should come in handy from time to time!!!

I asked because that's where you can adjust the settings for the regen brakes. You can select if you want it activated by the brake switch, throttle, or both, I believe. So if you want to try the thumb throttle (trigger brake) you have to select that option BR/SW(select 20%-100%) then just mount it where you think it's best . I used some tubing as a spacer around the rear view mirror post to mount it. I understand about the warranty. Maybe your dealer might play with the idea. Now when I ride another scooter I reach with my index finger in vain out of habit, it's kind of funny. Once you've tried it you can never go back.
Thanks for all your posts they've been helpful.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Well after my big disappointment with my 720p sunglasses from deal extreme.com dead on arrival and they want them back to get a replacement. Problem is, I paid $38 for the glasses and will cost me $89 to send them back an no gaurentee I will get a working pair back, I figured to just give up on the crap one and get the best. Basically you can't do a thing with the glasses without it crashing. Plug it in, it will crash, turn it on, 9/10 times it will crash. etc etc. Plus the few videos I got were terrible in low light. Looks to be 240x320 upscaled to 720p. Plus it recorded in MJPEG which is HUGE! Even my class 10 memory card couldn't keep up without skipping frames.

DO NOT BUY ANY 720p GLASSES THAT LOOK LIKE THIS
HD SunGlasses Spy Camcorder.jpg

So after a LOT of research I was going to buy a VisionX glasses that actually used the iPhone 4 camera module with an optical stabilised lens! But they ended up disappearing from the net?

So I have now ordered a pair of Eye-View720HD sunglasses. They record in MOV format using the h.264 codec to give nice smooth video and it also has a wide angle (nearly fish eye) lens to give a very wide angle of view which will be great for videos while riding my scooter.

Here is a photo of the GOOD glasses (i hope) I have ordered for $199

And a youtube clip showing the quality of the glasses. BUT, you know me, I will upload my own video's when I get them and I'll let you know if they suck or not.

So if all goes well then I "should" be able to upload a lot more videos of the scooter in action.

Hi Laurent,

The difference is likely to be in the motor controller, rather than the motor
there may be no difference.....

Correct quote, Johnny :-) That is what Mountain described as the hardware difference. My Thunder, even with the originally mounted Kelly KBL72201 contoller, let loose a short burst of some 140 battery-A on the "5kW" motor during acceleration (at around 40km/h), which multiplied by around 72V that a fully charged 24-cell 40Ah GBS battery could muster at that >3C discharge and 20°C results in whopping 10.08kW electrical power flowing into the controller, and probably still more than 9kW of that should reach the motor at that point, which would result in close to 8kW mechanical power. And my acceleration measurements at that time indicated slightly above 8kW of mechanical power at the rear wheel in that 40km/h speed range.
But when speeding up a 3km hill with my 10-year-old son behind me it became rather apparent at the top that the motor leads and the motor housing where both well beyond the temperature when protein begins to coagulate, i.e. you burn your fingers. We once measured around 60°C on the leads. So thicker leads are surely a good thing when planning to use 8kW of mechanical power from the erider.cn 5kW motor on a more regular basis, but I also suspect that the temperatures inside the hub could become unhealthy for the coil insulation, the permanent magnets and even the rubber tires. So for the time being I view the 8kW only as peak power and 5kW as continuous. Which still results in quite awsome torque :-)

As for proportional regen, for the sake of battery lifetime I would still not go much beyond my 18% of 350A brake switch regen setting (63A max at high speeds). My dealer was already very helpful in getting E-Sprit to aknowledge that his "de-tuning" efforts on the replacement KEB72801X controller would keep my scooter within their warantee, and I do not want to overstress his willingness in this respect...

Those look like a good set of video glasses, Pcarlson :-) Let's hope they live up to their price...
