I will also take my Thunder apart when the BMS arrives, could you possibly e-mail me the "key" pics of the disassembly?

I think I will start an own "Thunder" thread so we will no longer have to hijack Pcarlson's 8kW thread :-) But not today...

UPDATE: 3635.1km

I am happy to announce that I have received a replacement HID bulb from "auto-retrofit" because my right hand bulb was a lot dimmer than the left.

I installed my HID lights November 27th at 2490km so After a month and a further 1145km the HID lights are still running perfectly without a hitch.

I installed the power meter on December 19th at 3441.7km and in that 193.4km I have used $2.26 of power (15.1c/kWh), so that's about 1.17c per Km or $11.67 per 1000km

That works out to 7.7kwh/100km (or 77Wh/km), exactly the same as my average (though mine is averaged over ~15'000km)

Out of curiosity, how fast do you normally ride?

It will be interesting to see if 77Wh/km is an outlier or the norm for you

77W/KM sounds very high. But then your bike and yourself sound heavier than my bike and myself. Just out of curiosity, what is the wife getting in W/KM?

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

I'm currently at around 7.8kWh/100km (average over 3400km) with the same motor and probably charger too, but different (and possibly slightly less efficient) controller and different battery. My riding is on the fast side with around 20% full blast (75...86km/h, which should be 100km/h if my bike could do it...), 60% at 70km/h and the remainder city riding below 50km/h. In full armour I probably weigh in at around 105kg.
So Phil's 7.7kWh/100km sound quite believable to me. The charger (GBS/Elite 72-10) in conjunction with the battery pack only has about 79% efficiency, so that is probably the main culprit for the not so good overall efficiency of our bikes :-(

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

No, I have the same carpy GBS charger; the difference is more likely lighter bike, rider, and maybe more efficient controller/motor. I'm only 83kg in gear; bike 138kg. I'm seeing ~45WH/KW in riding 67-100KM/H as seen by the Cycle Analyst, not as seen by the outlet. So 45/.8 = ~56WH/KM by the outlet???? It would be interesting to see his wife's efficiency.

LOL :-)
I have also had weeks with 5.7 to 5.9 kWh/100km, so your 56Wh/km guesstimate is not really that far off. But I would also be interested if Pcarlson has some energy usage values from his wife's scooter too. But I think the Cycle Analyst only resides in his machine...

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

I notice that when the battery is fully charged the charger still draws 35w or so all the time. On the cycle analyst I tend to average 51wh/km when I ride sensibly and up to 60wh/km when I ride fast (80kmh +)

The absolutely worst economy I've seen was on my fast trip to south Canberra running 100km/h all the way for 24km and then full speed all the way back home clocking up 50km at full throttle using around 44Ah which is about 63wh/km. as for my wife, she doesn't want anything extra on her bike so next time we go for a ride, I'll make her ride my bike with the cycle analyst.

I notice that when the battery is fully charged the charger still draws 35w or so all the time.

This means your charger does seem to be the GBS/TS/Elite 72-10 then? Even though my charging display continues showing all 5 green charging LED's as long as the charger is plugged in it does not measurebly draw any current from the grid. With "measurably" I mean above 0.5W, as that is lowest resultion of my energy meter. The

as for my wife, she doesn't want anything extra on her bike so next time we go for a ride, I'll make her ride my bike with the cycle analyst.

Good idea! I CAN understand the apprehension of your wife though concering tinkering with a running system...

My charger and battery is on average 84% efficient (charger is just over 93%).

Be aware with the cycle analyst, that only the Ah value counts down during regen, the Wh value stays the same

If you have meaningful amounts of regen, than your Wh and Wh/km values will read high.

Range increase from regen braking was 6%. I averaged 48 watt/hours per mile. I went 32miles and used 22.2 amp/hours. My pack voltage was 80v with a minimum voltage of 60v(sag). Thanks for the tip on the cycle analyst Reikiman this thing is great!

Also 20mph=28wh/mi 40mph=48wh/mi 48mph=68wh/mi on flat pavement. Again, wind, temps, gradient, all variables, but roughly this is what I found.

Hmm, I'm wondering, I know the public transportation is the best thing to use since that is what the radio tells me on superkiss FM loud rock me deaf 102. Let's see, only $1.85 for 3.5 miles or 52 cents a mile. Wow 1 Australian dollar = usd. So 1.16c/km=1.16c/(0.62 miles)=1.87c/mile. So from superkiss km I learned that 52 cents is less than 1.87 cents!!! WOW!! I should get another math prize for my breakthrough!

Ok, Public Transportation or any subsidized transportation for hire aside. To fairly compare operating costs of gas/v to electric vehicles, it's probably correct to include battery depreciation. Other than that, I don't see any additional expenses. In fact, you could argue that the batt/dep cost would be absorbed by the additional costs of operating a gas/v.(oil changes, tune ups, etc)

Best price on Lifepo4 40ah batt each= $43US W/shipping about $50 each
24x$50=$1200
installation say $300
Company says 5years or 50k miles warranty.
So if you don't get any miles over the warranty.

$1500/50k miles= another 3 cents a mile. Not Bad.

CHL lithium battery, I think that beats tenergy. How does the 2012 CHL compare to the 2011 chl? What did you do to make it last longer? How did you test the increase in IR with time? (8 years aging tests are interesting if only 0 months have elapsed since the 2012 battery model but I trust you.)

What is the warranty on my September 2011 CHL cells with no BMS? I know the BMS is coming soon but just wondering.

I'm getting close to 4000km with no BMS without a problem.

Well today was a real test for the scooter. First day of summer and the temperature hit 47celcius (116F) and I had to run between stores quickly back and forth from home. Long story short I rode 65km today pretty much all at top speed around 90km/h and the motor was very hot to touch but it never had a loss of power.

The bike is now resting outside while charging and cooling down.

In Israel it’s a normal that temperature.
The motor has heat protection, if led by odometer blinks 8 times it means that heat protection is on.

Best wishes to everyone and that electric vehicles are more and more numerous in the world! I come to you once again because I always have a concern with an electric scooter of 8KW buy from Mr Chen (we are near and not exchange poorly of hand technique on the scooters electric!) so I have a problem with a 8KW with the controller sevcon gen4 in 180A Since the delivery of the scooter I have a big concern of the power is turned on! Indeed, the engine is cut 1 times on 3 in acceleration and in the court of road at very low speed (3Kmh!!the controller sevcon flashes 11 times! I try everything with Mr Chen and there was nothing done the engine is cut all the time. I also have a concern for the market back! It is impossible to reduce to 1mm with the scooter under penalty of engine that is cut too! Of that the scooter declined a small noise is heard (acute) and the engine to tendency even to return toward the front all alone! If a person can help us because we all try with Mr Chen engine change 2 times, handful of acceleration change 5 times!

Thank you

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

the controller sevcon flashes 11 times!

According to the blink chart, 11 flashes indicates a "general fault" caused by the hall sensors. Now since you have changed the motor then we can assume that the new motor had good working hall sensors so that leaves either the Sevcon controller or the hall sensor cabling. Check the programming in the Sevcon controller and also check the sensor cabling. If Mr Chen is helping you, ask him to test a NEW motor with a NEW sevcon controller and if it works then try those 2 pieces in your bike. I've had a problem with a kelly controller sent to me that had the green and yellow hall sensor wires not in the correct position in the hall sensor plug, the motor ran but VERY noisy and low torque.

Hi Pete. I live in a ground floor unit and have no other place to charge them. It is covered by the upstairs balcony from the weather a bit.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Well I went for another ride yesterday after work up to Mt Stromlo overlooking Canberra. My display showed it was 48 celcius again. One thing I did notice on my CLIMB up this mountain, even though my maximum speed was around 60km/h (very steep hill) it was still fast enough for me. Even after 28Ah used holding full throttle going UPHILL I noticed the battery voltage was still sitting around 75v and spitting out 8700watts! It seems these CHL batteries LOVE the hot weather. When I got close to home after 68km and 40.1Ah I gave full throttle again and the cells still only dropped to 74.4v. Wow

After an overnight charge I woke up to see the Cycle Analyst saying -0.75Ah! That means it had filled the battery (40.1Ah to 0Ah is full then to -0.75Ah) plus a whole 0.75Ah extra!

Anyway still no cutouts due to overheating or any other problems, and I'm getting closer to that 4000km mark.

That's really impressive, if they keep on performing like that as advertised, this will be great news. That's amazingly low sag. Would you mind noting the average speed,wh/km, max amps, min volts, and regen% on a an average trip, and then a trip like that? I wouldn't ask but I know it's easy with the C/A to get that info. It's seems like the max amps and low volts on the saved screen are always higher and lower, respectively, than what I see on the screen when driving. I think it picks up very short peaks that we don't see. That thing is a bevy of information. Thanks for all your posts, beautiful picture, though I'm wishing I was in Canberra as it's -4C here right now. I've been getting away with running just as much power through my stock XM3500li motor so far, but not a steady 8700 watts! If I had to try a long hill I'm afraid I might melt the windings. I this what would likely happen?

Hi Bill,

Yeah I can get all that info but I've been talking with the manufacturer of the cycle analyst because my trip distance can sometimes reset itself at random :-( its a bug in v2.21 and it of course stuffs up my wh/km readings. I KNOW the CA can give funny numbers because I'm sure my max speed today was not 683.1km/h. If it was I wouldn't have cars overtaking me. I've got some errands to run after work tomorrow so I'll post the max A and Min V avg speed etc etc. hopefully the CA doesn't reset it's trip meter.

I too hope these CHL cells hold up well in winter. Our winter is like 5 to 10 celcius. -4!! Holy cow! It's not even that cold at the snowfields here! Forget the batteries, humans sag at that temperature!!

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

The Thundersky cells show very little sag during the warm Phoenix weather. It has amazed me how much these batteries like the warm 100F + temps. However, after several miles, my controller has overheated and shut down for a few minutes. I carry a digital laser thermometer with me, and the controller shuts down at 125F. Do you have a means for measuring controller and motor temp?

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Thank you

Laurent (france)
