I too hope these CHL cells hold up well in winter. Our winter is like 5 to 10 celcius. -4!! Holy cow! It's not even that cold at the snowfields here! Forget the batteries, humans sag at that temperature!!

Last winter we had around -15C for like 3 months...

Your min and max currents look very similar to what we have measured on my ride, regen is limited to -60A and for a short moment during acceleration 158A flow. But my Vmin would likely be 10V lower at +5°C battery temp., and that only because I ease off the "throttle" when my 65V red light comes on, else I would either cause the BMS to shut off the battery for a few seconds due to one cell dropping too low, or the controller would shut down below 60V :-(
74.7V at most likely said 160.6A is quite a dream, even in spite of the high temperatures Down Under. I am pretty sure my GBS would only muster not much more than 70V even at those same high temps. when having to pump out 160A :-O

Hmm. So the CHL cells seem to be happy. I remember my temporary scooter with Thundersky cells sagging to 66v under just 85A. Now you can see why I'm loving these CHL cells. That data is just coming into work. I have about a 30km ride to do after work so that should give some more insight for you. When riding, I NEVER see more than 110A so that 160A must be for a split second. Oh I didn't list the km travelled...Oops. I'll post my readings tonight after work but 9% regen sounds pretty good to me.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Yes,it is very confused,Mr Laurent bought one of my scooter and another 2 motor,2 sevcon controllers in France,he exchanged all motors and all controllers and 5 throttle, all kind of exchange and all kind of testing, but diagnosis still flash 11 times, each motor have 2 sets 6pcs of hall sensors,it can't be all broken, anyone here could help us ?

Hi Mountain,

Yes I've had a few messages with Laurent and it sounds like you need to get back to basics.

* Connect the battery to the Sevcon controller (directly, no switches etc)
* Connect throttle cable and hall sensor cables
* Connect Phase wires to motor

Disconnect everything else like DC/DC converter, lights, blinkers etc etc UNTIL you find the fault

I DOUBT you could have 2 faulty motors and 2 faulty controllers. I would be surprised if his 12v DC/DC converter has gone faulty and is feeding a low voltage into the controller somewhere.

If Mountain has sent a NEW motor AND controller that HE TESTED and it doesn't work for Laurent then it will be something else in the electrical system. I would suggest measuring the voltage going to the hall sensors, it should be 5v directly from the controller, then make sure 5v comes out of each hall sensor when you spin the wheel.

I too had this 11 flashing problem once when I just got home, went over a small bump and the bike stopped with 11 flashes. I blew 1 set of hall sensors in my motor. I was told that 11 flashes means 12v from my DC/DC converter had somehow bypassed the controller and fed 12v into the hall sensors. To this day I don't know how/why it happened but it has never happened since.

I notice the standard 12v DC/DC converter can only output 10.5v with headlights on so it's a low end unit to start with. My 400w 13.8v DC/DC converter has been happy driving two 35w HID lights and still puts out a steady 13.8v even at 110w (during warm up), hence my bright headlights. But all my blinkers, horn, brake lights are still run off the standard 12v DC/DC converter so they are all a little weak.

I got a set of 150,000mcd LED blinkers for Christmas and even at 10.5v they are EXTREMELY bright for a 1cm wide blinker! They have orange CREE LED's inside

Thanks. I wonder if the glitch has to do with it being tied to the controller. I'm still using my old magnet setup and haven't had any problem. I do want to move out of the stone age and tie in to the controller though. But Johnny is right -4c isn't bad, I'll let you know when it really gets cold. I don't ride in the winter here, it's not much fun.

That's about in line with what I get, but much less voltage sag. Sounds like this PDT Version is a real improvement on the old scooters. I'm glad to see things moving forward. Thanks so much for all your contributions.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Well I've been stuck traveling all around Australia for work so haven't had much time on the scooter. But today I am happy to announce I have passed 4000km!! The bike works just as good as it did on the delivery date! There are a few broken plastic connectors (bad design) but apart from that it is still going great!!

I've got a whole heap of things to do today as I've booked a trip to China for a week!! Going to a city called Guangzhou for a wedding.

So today will be a good test of the scooter running all around town. Even my wife has full confidence in her bike. Car parking has gone up to $9 a day at work, free for scooters so I smile a little more each day.

Monday I'm being sent to Perth (3500km) for work all week so again I can ride my bike.

Seeya!!

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

I installed the power meter on December 19th at 3441.7km and in that 193.4km I have used $2.26 of power (15.1c/kWh), so that's about 1.17c per Km or $11.67 per 1000km

I got the power bill today and it is $35 LESS than our last bill. So I am resetting the bikes power meter today.

4312.8km
$9.53 in power used

That's 871.1km for $9.53. Not that good as its above 1c per km. but still better than petrol I guess.

Today I reset the power meter at 4312.8km

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Just an update on the scooter. I've now passed 4500km but I had my first problem on my way into work yesterday. After just 1km from home on a full charge I stopped at a red light. When the light went green I gave a lot of throttle and the bike made a clunk and stalled? I turned the bike off and on again and off she went. I have been trying my hardest to make it do the problem again but it just won't fail. I know from experience that the fault was caused by a hall sensor. Off a full charge there has always been noises from the hub like the hall sensors are not quite aligned correctly but it has never been an issue. I have built about 5 electric bicycles and I have never had this problem, but all my ebikes used a square wave PWM speed controller. This Sevcon is a sine wave PWM speed controller which is why there is ZERO sound from it at low speed, no electric groan.

Anyway so I've put it down to just being a one off. I can't really complain, over 4500km and this is the only time I have lost power while driving. I've stalled my wife's Barina more than that ;-)

My wife loves my HID headlights so we have ordered another set for her. The low beam shutters seem to block just a little bit too much light but they are still very good lights, very bright, reliable, and not one person has flashed me because it has that sharp cut-off line for low-beam.

My CHL batteries are still finishing their charge with around an extra 0.4Ah and still only sag to 74 or 73.5v even when I hammer the bike with 115Amps. Yesterday while trying to re-produce the fault, I found the steepest hill (25°) stopped on it, then blasted to full throttle from 0, it went up the hill fine. I only saw 110-115A but the Cycle analyst recorded a peak of 186Amps and a minimum voltage of 73.5v. I just find that very good.

I see there is someone else here with a XM-4000 with 7000 miles (11,200km). Wow!! That is very good, I sure hope I can get that, and the way things are going, I'm confident I will.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Hi PCarlson. 7039 miles and counting on my 4000li. The lithium cells seem to be holding up very well, even without BMS. When I took her apart about 5 months ago all 20 cells were within 0.1 volts of each other, and I will be testing that again soon. The bike has been nearly flawless in those 7000 miles and absolutely the only issue occured when I rode in a very heavy downpour and shorted the ignition switch. (not the bike's fault). And I will never do that again. I have an engineering degree, and would consider this cycle to be an absolutely brilliant piece of engineering.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Strange problem there Phil, let's hope it doesn't come back. However, electrical experience tells us it eventually WILL, usually when you least expect it :-)
Your CHL are still BMS-less, I assume? Someone is not being true to their word, whith all the hype a certain "CHL Lithium Battery" had generated here, no longer just recently...

But your CHL still seem to be behaving heaps better than my GBS. I have ridden down to ambient temps of -19°C lately, with my battery heating on almost all night to get the pack at least up to +10°C in the morning. +15°C is my aim, as above that battery temp. it is capable of all my driving without sagging below 65V red light. Without the battery heating that I put in the week before Christmas it was already clear that I had won my bet with my Thunder as to who would succumb to the cold first. I can clearly go even below -20°C before my clothing options begin to thin out, so-to-speak. But already below +5°C my GBS cannot be used in a very meaningful manner anymore. With the battery heating however we are still a pair at -19°C ambient :-) At work I was allowed access to the parking deck below my office building during the day. With temperatures only around freezing in there my way home was always made possible with a battery temp. down to a minimum of +2°C. That evening it was a real drag, but I made it home anyway.

During the coldest weekend so far I actually let the battery cool down to -7.5°C and went for a short joyride, or rather a sorrow-ride. I completely ignored the red battery warning light at 65V to see what would happen. The voltage of the fully charged pack dropped to a minimum of 62.5V, and maximum speed slightly downhill even was not quite real 70km/h, down from the 86 at battery temp well above 20°C, and still 80 or so at +10°C. However, neither the controller (that is set to a mimumum shutoff at 60V) nor a single BMS board shut down the system, so all cells where at least at or above 2.5V individually. But it was such a sad experience I have no desire at all to repeat this kind of test if I can help it :-(

Is it?!?! Cool! I'll have to check out their website...

I'm not worried about royalties, Eric has bent over backwards whenever I've asked him things about the bike, plus I'd like more people to go electric.

As for the 'stall' I think I must have had the wheel inbetween hall sensors in a one in a million chance.

As for you getting down to 62.5v!!! There is NO WAY I would try that without a BMS. You are correct, My 24 CHL batteries do NOT have a BMS yet. I email CHL Battery asking for progress but no reply yet. The most damage I have done so far (public holiday so shopping center was closed so I couldn't re-charge) to the cells was an 80.2km ride which used 44.3Ah and my resting voltage was 77.5v which is the lowest I've ever seen it. But under 100 to 110Amps the voltage sagged to 71v or so and I made a point of not using full throttle until I got home, I even slowed to 50km/h just to make sure I could get home. I have NEVER seen a voltage below 70v while riding under ANY circumstances yet, even riding up at 35° hill!! The scooters are rated for only a 30° incline but there is a section in Canberra that has a 35° incline and my top speed was around 25 to 30 km/h for 1.8km to the top. I made it up, but all the REGEN coming down overheated the motor so I let it cool for a few minutes. My wife (a lot lighter than me) didn't have a problem with her scooter.

My wife just passed 1000km on her bike and hasn't had a thing go wrong. The only mod on her bike is LED blinkers. But she has ordered some HID lights same as mine so I'll have to find a DC/DC converter or try using the an old computer power supply.

Oh yes. I had to hit SHIFT+Refresh in windows explorer.

I took that photo of the red scooter. Notice the RED 'muffler guard' that is the 5000w loan scooter. I sent erider a bunch of photos for him to use. I'm even making a whole new user manual in VERY good english, and I may even be able to publish it to apple's iBooks for free

Hi, I think this is my first post, but I follow this site for a long time. This thread is very interesting and I thank you for all the information posted here, very useful.
Talking about the how the cold affect LIFEPO4 batteries, I did a log on a trip to check how much are sagging below freezing temperature..
Se the graph below :-)
I have a cheap e-scooter with 18 TS-Cells 40AH. I bought the TS batteries 10 monthes ago and they have 5.500Km on them.

The log has been done by my diy "arduino based" system. If you are interested on more graphs and info regarding the logger you can check this link (unfortunately it's Italian, but google translator can do a good job if you are interested)
http://www.jobike.it/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12035

As you can see the outside temperature stay between -9° and -5°, while the battery temperature rise from -4° to 2°

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Thanks ccriss for the log graph! It seems your cells are a very close relative of my GBS, or maybe even the same as apparently GBS used to make their cells in the guise of the yellow TS cells before they switched to their own new housing design and name. Your graph also shows dipps down to 46V which would roughly be the equivalent to my 62.5V. But the currents during those dips is a little less than what my scoot "eats" in such circumstances.

Phil, rest assured I DO have a BMS on board that will also shut down the scooter if a single cell drops below 2.5V :-)

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

But the currents during those dips is a little less than what my scoot "eats" in such circumstances.

Sorry I forgot to describe the scooter, it's a 2000W ,the controller is unknown, but it seem is capable of keeping at least 60A continuous..
The maximum peak of current I've seen was around 110A at 51V, but the outside temp was 10°. In term of ampere, I suppose nothing comparable with you powerful scooter that can draw 150A or more..

Thank you for the feedback on your GBS batteries, it's very interesting having a real life comparison between different batteries (in particular below 0°)

Now the quote is correct, sorry for this double post

UPDATE: HID Lights have been installed on my wife's scooter on 3 March 2012 at 1264km

They are being powered by a second 120w DC/DC converter exactly the same modem as the original one. As it turns out, I didn't need a big 400w DC converter after all. Oh well. My wife wanted Blue halo lights to match her blue scooter. The lights are much better than the stock ones by a LOT!!!

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

OK, so I am going to go for a cruise after work today. This will bring up 5000km on my Erider Electric scooter. I must say all in all I'm pretty impressed with the scooter, I must say I've been equally impressed with the after sales support from Erider in Melbourne! Apart from a few hic-cups this bike has been pretty much plug 'n' play. This prevented me spending around $450+ in petrol for the gas guzzling prius. But after riding electric, it's not about the cost savings anymore, it's actually a smoother and nicer ride than a ICE vehicle. I'm not sure if I have an EV Grin or an ICE frown.

Either way I am LOVING the electric scooter.

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

Nice to hear Phil :-) My Thunder is also happily bringing me to work every morning and bringing me home in the evening, with currently 4320km on the clock.
However, I am a little on the unlucky front here, dealer-wise: My dealer is going to quit soon and move back home, as he cannot make a living from elctric two-wheelers, and the other dealer HAS already moved away from here, AND the company for which he was an official service point not only went bankrupt last week, but has definitely closed it's doors and layed off all it's employees. They were successfully in the business of elelctric mobility for 20 years, building a futuristic-looking electrical three-wheeled cabin scooter called City-El, and BAM - done and over with :-(
So I am now in the process of hawking, so-to-speak, trying to convince the biggest motorcycle shop in the town I work in to jump on the bandwagon of electric scooters and to take on the "orphaned" customers of the two dealers, the current and the future ones. The good thing is that they already showed great interest in my Thunder when I had them replace my crappy IRC Urban Snow on the front wheel with my tried and tested favourite make. Wednesday this week I will go there for some business talk and educating them in all things pertaining to electric scooters, at least as much as I know about, to whet their appetite... Wish me luck :-)

And I have a question for you, pcarlson: The high current shunts that go with the Cycle Analyst have big M8 bolts for connecting the negative battery lead and whatever branches off of there. Does your PDT spec scooter have those bigger ring terminals, or do they have the same M6 size ones like in my Thunder? Where did you connect the shunt to, and did you have to change the ring terminals?
And I have another (small) video request: you once made a short video of your borrowed Lightning on the main stand, accelerating the motor a few times at full "throttle". Could you make another one just like that with your 5000km PDT Lightning? Including regen decceleration once? I'm just curious as to the audible difference of trapezoid to sine commutation, or if a squeaking disc brake will be the loudest thing :-)

My rides:
2017 Zero S ZF6.5 11kW, erider Thunder 5kW

Cool!!

Ah bugger!!

Good luck, and fingers crossed. The motorcycle shops here in Canberra are scared of electric scooters so they flat out refuse to work on them, even to adjust the brakes. Yes that's you CANBERRA MOTORCYCLE CENTER!! Move with the times you DINOSAURS

I don't know, I guess it has the same M6 bolts, I just cut the battery NEGATIVE cable and put on two M8 ring terminals and bolted straight to the shunt. I used high temp silver solder so it could handle the heat, as it turned out, the wire barely gets 30°c after a long ride.

Where did you connect the shunt to, and did you have to change the ring terminals?

I connected the shunt (about 13cm long) to the metal tubing that makes up the seat bucket. I cut the original negative wire and put on two M8 ring terminals for the shunt.

No problem, I should be able to do that tonight because my axle nut has come loose again and is making the clink noise again. So I'll make the video while I have the side guards off. I might put on some lok-tite to see if that stops the nut coming loose.

As requested here is a small video I made suring my lunch break. I had to take the sides off to tighten the axle nuts again so I made a quick video with my iphone.
